[QUOTE="JeremyCuse, post: 3249451, member: 43"] I like Helmer a lot as a defender but he's played almost exclusively at LSM when he has had a long pole. I think this move, again assuming its 100% accurate tells us a few things. 1. Helmer's versatility is to much for the staff to ignore and being a Senior who has been through the wars he adds a nice combo with Mellen (he is also a big hitter not afraid to get physical. 2. The cynical view of this tells me that we may not have as much depth at close defense as I/we had hoped. Helmer passing by Murphy and DePietro is a bit concerning although I will say DiPietro taking a non Freshmen year RS voluntary last year kind of told you he probably wasn't very high on the playing time pecking order. Part of me wonders if Staats isn't fully recovered from his ACL tear at this point as well. If Helmer is being moved to close full time I would have to think that Kennedy being bumped down to close is probably less likely to occur now unless the matchup calls for it and or SU is getting beat at close needs help (ie last years RU game). I also have to think that Helmer's days of playign SSDM are over. I could still see him rotating some time at LSM if Kennedy gets bumped down for a game or two but it wouldn't make much sense for him to see at SSDM barring major injury issues or unless he struggles at close. 3. I wonder if the staff overall is still unsure of what they want to do at close. I have zero issue playing Helmer at close if that is the best matchup but being a Sr and not playing the position at all his first three years here is a bit concerning as I outlined above. I think most felt Murphy was probably primed for that 2nd spot with the third being up in the air. If Helmer being the 2nd guy is true that leave me to believe things haven't solidified there as much as we had hoped. I also wonder if it opens up the third spot to a dark horse guy like Kennedy's brother or Zack Lee, although it would be tough to see a RS frosh or a true frosh grab a spot this early into the season as Desko tends to go with a seasoned hand first and then make a move later in the year (see Trimboli's frosh year).
