He is a good athlete and having a background now at SSDM certainly makes him a smarter/more diverse player.  I thought his stick skills were lacking back when he was backup LSM, so not sure how that has been helped by playing with a short stick the last two years. How many players have played close defense, short stick and LSM in the same career? Can't be a long list.

Lastly, maybe the Lehigh scrimmage was so disappointing that someone had to be benched for it, and Helmer was the beneficiary of it.  The coaching staff, seeing so much talent on the offensive end of the field, might feel nervous about entrusting the defense with too much youth, and just feel better about inserting older players. I think Desko has invested a lot in this year's team, and while he's good about developing young talent, this might not be the year for it.
