It’s one guy, right? For now, at least

We got one guy. how everyone feel about that? is it a “no worries, they knew transfer portal was going to be a mess” or should we have some concerns about this.

3 guys. it's all 'recruiting'.

sure, that was my question.

if they felt like the portal was the way to go, makes sense

This is just dawning upon you now?

Well - we only went after a handful of other guys in the ‘21 class, and Benny was THE man we wanted - and got.

Frank Ansalem was originally a ‘21, but reclassified to ‘20.
Assuming he stays, he’s effectively our 2nd ‘croot for that class - only with the benefit of a year of experience in the program.

With the portal blasted wide open now - does it even matter?

that class was recruited in 2019 for the most part. Don’t think at the time anyone anticipated having half their rosters transfer.

not at all, im asking the question of a) was it the plan. b) is it a concern

DJ what is your concern about it? Did you have the same concerns this past December when it was just Benny?

I did. I think we underrate depth and then act shocked when someone gets hurt or doesn’t play well...or, the kicker on this board, when someone leaves “early”...and we have no one to go to.

but if the plan was transfer portal, I understand it better.

I think it is a problem. I don't believe they thought hey, we only need one guy because we can always hit the portal. On the good side, I think their plan was always to hit 2022 really hard. And that is still in play.

At one point it looked like the staff was preparing for a small 2021 class and was going all in on 22. Then Dior jumped and it seems like the plan changed.

JB has been saying that 2022 is the big class. If no one but seniors had left, the team would be:

Jesse
Frank
Quincy
Alan
Benny
Woody
JBA
Buddy
Kadary
Joe

So, as of now:
Jesse
Frank
Cole
Alan
Benny
Woody
Jimmy
As
Buddy
Symir.
Joe

I am sure there are discussions with folks, the outcomes of which are pending decisions of Alan, Woody and Quincy.

I don’t think JB would not let Quincy come back. Same thing if AG tested the NBA waters. That would be bad form. However, if Woody, Quincy or AG entire the portal, I think they will get replaced.

Just this guy’s opinion

sure, that was my question.

the ways to lose player and the number of players lost has grown but so have the ways to gain players and the number of player you could gain.

Hard to have a roster of more than 9 guys when the coach only plays 7.5. It’s only a problem if we get some injuries like we had in 17-18 and ended up with Brandon Bayer as our 3rd guard.

roster management and recruiting strategy need to go hand-in hand with current environment.

the calculus has changed.

its hard to project out very much past the current season now. Stashing players for later seasons carries a lot more risk than before. Still has to be considered but its much more art than science with this portal madness.

Deeper rotation might be a good way to keep more players around for longer a la FSU. But no gaurantee there, either.

Might not be able to attract players with only 20 min on offer.

Also complex systems that take multiple years to learn are also more difficult to implement. a la the zone...will be interesting to see how long it takes swider, torrence, benny etc to acclimate to the zone...

overall, the deeper the roster the better...both for short and long term...difficult to keep a lot of deth around but maybe winning can be the key there.

so maybe you take on a bunch of players even with the knowledge that they might not be around for their entire careers...but to protect the contigencies...or maybe you keep it small and keep options open to land bigger fish...idk.

It is definitely a quality but not quantity . Yes I would like to see another guy or 2 but I am excited about Benny Williams. I mean top 20 5 star player makes me feel pretty good

When was the portal and the no year sitting out unofficially a go? Seems like we’ve been done recruiting 2021 for a long time and the portal may have been after that?

We were looking at only 10 guys for next year, if all stayed, before the extra year for players and portal waiver so I’m not sure what the plan was. Maybe it was always a plan to add a transfer or two this off-season when the staff finished 2021 a while ago? The portal just added more turnover and need to get the transfers?

It could be a case that teams clear space for a big year like in the NBA when you hear of a team having a bunch of cap space to go after players in 2022 or what have you...

Maybe it could be better to keep some open spots for next year instead of bringing in players that are just gonna leave anyway or neve play. But in tha case depth from injuries has to be secured.

The staff's roster management has been questionable, IMO, for some time now.

That said, I don't think it's a problem that a lot of guys transferred and the team is stuck with using the portal. If the opportunity for a free transfer existed in the past, I think more guys would have transferred rather than stuck it out here and made this more typical.

there is a reason 25% pf the country is in the portal. used to be if you got your 10 min you took your time and tried to get more next yr.. now everyone is just gonna jump all over. even teams that had lots of 10 man rotations kids still only get 5-10 min and want more so those teams will see turnover too.

Yeah there will need to be some rules or it will be chaotic. Maybe something like you can't portal jump in consecutive years or something. There have to be some practical rules around this.

It's a one-time thing is my understanding. Players get one free jump in their college career.

IF they want to transfer again, it's the old fashioned way, where they must sit out a year.

Now - a guy like Alan Griffin may just luck out, because he got a waiver of his sitting out last year, AND he still may get the free jump provided by the portal this year.
(but I don't know if this has 100% been determined to be fact, yet.)

Or - he may try going Pro.
But regardless, I really don't expect him to (be allowed to) return.

meh, it's more like the sit-out year does have a punitive effect as intended. If this is the case for transfers going forward, coaches may have to stop promising the moon to recruits and then yanking out the rug once they're on campus.

If AG transferred last year and played immediately does that mean he burned his one time transfer/play exemption and if he transfers now he has to sit a year? That could well change his decision to stay. ??
