I'll go against my nature and try to be positive here.  For the 2nd WC race the more important number than games back is what's in the loss column.  If you have games in hand you can makeup the gap with wins but can't erase losses.  Before play today the Yankees are 2 losses behind Oakland, and 1 behind Seattle and Toronto.  Yankees have 3 games in hand on Oakland, 2 on Seattle, and Toronto has 1 in hand on NY.  Here's the breakdown of the remaining 64 Yankees games:

Most games vs. O's, the one AL East team they don't struggle against this year.  4 games left H2H vs. A's and Mariners.  Only 6 left for each of BOS and TB, so don't get completely dominated in those. There is a path to the 2nd WC which will convince Hal to run it back next year when they should blow it up.
