The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Wednesday approved football measures intended to strengthen the accuracy of the targeting rule, limit blocking below the waist and address teams that appear to fake injuries to gain an advantage.

All these rules changes will take effect in the 2022 season.

  • In games that have instant replay, when a targeting foul occurs in the second half, the carryover penalty (of sitting out the first half of that player's next game) will be eligible for further appeal.
  • To address teams that are awarded an injury timeout through deceptive actions, panel members approved a reporting and investigation process.
  • The panel approved a proposal to improve safety and simplify the rules governing blocking below the waist. The proposal will allow blocking below the waist only by linemen and stationary backs inside the tackle box. Outside the tackle box on scrimmage plays, blocking below the waist will be prohibited.
  • If a ball carrier simulates a feet-first slide, officials will declare the runner down at that spot.
  • Defensive holding will remain a 10-yard penalty but will always carry an automatic first down.

I wonder what the fake injury process will be after the investigate. Im still in the if you can get off the field get off the field mode. They could have always called a penalty for faking an injury just never did

So if i read that right does it mean no can block below the waist outside the box or just lineman outside the box? no more cut blocks on sweeps..

Not sure a review for faking injuries will stop the process. A better rule would have been if the player is injured and a time out is called the player must remain out until the next defensive series. If we are worried about player safety they should stay out long enough to be properly evaluated.

Wish the fake injury penalty was more severe but anything they helps teams playing at tempo is probably going to help us. Sure looks like we will be playing tempo a lot in 2022.

Good to see Narduzzi and Pickett slapped down for the reprehensible crap they pulled to help get the ACC football championship against Wake.

It is good to see scumbag practices addressed quickly. Doesn’t happen nearly enough.

I could also see how a penalty that like would force defensive players in some situations to attempt to play through injuries rather than leave the field - and that could have its own issues. But I also haven’t seen a proposed policy better than what you’ve suggested here.

if a guy is hurt how is anything wrong about him being too hurt to play.. if you added the part about staying out until the drive is over or some number of plays happen thats a good safety thing.. if you are hurt enough to leave the game you probably should be out more than 1 play.. if he cant get off the field he shouldnt be playing. if he can, then get off the field.

they have a rule if your helmet comes off you have to leave for a play then having guys who are hurt missing a few seems right.
