They had enough options to get a cheap placeholder, but Cashman being Cashman tried to hit a homerun instead of just taking the walk. They could have just kept Gio and been OK and had ~$30m for a left fielder who can hit.

Franchy and Calhoun are guys who've bumped around the league for a while, but haven't done much.  They have plenty of ML experience at this point that they are who they are.  Since Franchy's little Judgian run the first week of the season, he's 1 for 21 with 9Ks.
