So far this spring the following players have entered the portal.

Jayden Brown, LB
Maraad Watson, DL
Enrique Cruz, OT
Dave Wohlabaugh, OL
Xavier Miles, DL
Michael John Jr, QB
Trebor Pena, WR
Willie Goodacre, OL
AJ Miller*, QB
Patrick Grusser*, QB/S
Jordan Montanez*, RB
I was expecting more movement by now. This is a bit concerning because by most estimates we would still need to trim another 15 or 16 roster spots to get under the proposed cap of 105. Granted we seem to have added approximately 10 walk-ons before spring ball. I appreciate Coach Brown's willingness to turn over ever rock in search of a diamond in the rough, but I was at the spring game and didn't see where any of the newer walk-ons were going to make a difference. If you back out the newer walk-ons then we still need to trim another 5 or 6 roster spots. Add on the one commitment we have received out of the spring portal and I'm counting us as 6 or 7 (maybe 8) over. At the same time, we are still entertaining players from the spring portal; QB, WR, OL, LB, CB. The more we add from the portal the players who are currently in the program will need to be let go. Two things concern me. One, the portal closes on Friday 4/25. I hope guys who are going to be let go are told so before the portal closes so they can try to find another home. To do otherwise is just plain wrong. I believe the coaches tries to showcase players like Montanez during the spring game to get some scrimmage film before they hit the portal. Second, I feel for those guys who are currently on the roster (QB, WR, OL, LB, CB etc...) and who the coaches are actively trying to over-recruit. It wouldn't surprise me to see a player or two try to secure their playing time by hitting the portal before it closes. Timing is key, and the devil is in the details. The portal can close on Friday and a player can feel good about their position on the roster only to have the program get a commitment from a player at their position out of the portal after said portal is closed. Players could get stuck without an exit door. The worst-case scenario would be to pick up a commitment after the portal closes and to drop a player from the program after the portal has closed (it wouldn't be the former starter; it would be the previous second or third string guy). Those guys would be allowed to remain in school on scholarship, but they would no longer be part of the football program. I've heard all about DART and Commitment, Care and Trust.

Are you committed to the program?
Do you care about the program?
Can the program trust you?
This can cut both ways.

Is the program committed to me (my development as a player, my development as a student and my development as a man)?
Does the program care about me?
Can I trust the program to look out for me?
It is often said that your players are your best recruiters. Well, if players don't feel as though you treated them (or their teammates) fairly, this could hurt future recruiting. Yes, collegiate sports are truly a business, but there is good business and there is bad business. I sure hope we will be practicing good business principles. This should be an interesting week. Go Orange! * = former walk-on.
