Baseball in Syracuse in March. That will be interesting.

We go to St Paul but they don't come here. That doesn't seem right.

Like the new scheduling model with week long series. It was at least in place all this season too.

That has to save a lot of money in travel costs.

The week long scheduling model has been in place since 2021.

Interesting event coming in April. Baseball and astronomy.,,,

The Mets recently had 5 of their prospects named to the top 100 in baseball. And I think all of them are likely to play in Syracuse at some point in 2024.

Could be a problem with those high flies.

Yup. Hell, it could be a problem with french fries if it is a total eclipse.

I am glad my phone has a light on it.

Way too early look at what the Syracuse Mets roster will look like. Some of these players will get hurt, some will start at Binghamton and some might get cut.

Acuna and Gilbert should be the two big position player prospects. Scott has really emerged and might be the best pitching prospect. But Vasil and Hamel are well regarded and I think Butto and Megill are good enough to be MLB starting pitchers right now. Can’t wait to see Megill’s new breaking pitch.

Starting pitchers
Jose Butto
Tylor Megill
Joey Lucchesi
Christian Scott
Mike Vasil
Dominic Hamel
Max Kranick
Justin Jarvis
David Petersen (second half of season)
Relief pitchers
Phil Bickford
Nate Lavender
Josh Walker
Eric Orze
Hunter Parsons
Reed Garrett
Austin Adams
Grant Hartwig
William Woods
Yohan Ramirez
Sean Reid-Foley

Catchers
Tomas Nido
Hayden Senger

Infielders
Luke Voit
Luke Ritter
Wyatt Young
Luisangel Acuna
Jose Peroza
Zach Short
Ronny Mauricio (maybe late in the season)

Outfielders
Ben Gamel
Brandon McIlwain
Drew Gilbert
Carlos Cortes
Trayce Thompson

That's a lot of pitchers!

That's a lot of pitchers!
Yes it is. A lot depends on the health of pitchers at the MLB level and below. Binghamton should have a strong pitching staff too.

Hopefully the competition raises everyone up another level.

It looks like it is going to be a good year to watch baseball in Syracuse.

Acuna, Vientos and Gilbert all are on the expected opening day roster and are expected to be major contributors.

Scott, Hamel and Vasil are expected to be part of the rotation, along with Lucchesi and Butto. That is a darned good rotation. Lavender and Hartwig head up a decent bullpen. That is probably the weakest area on the team.

My first visit to the ball park tonight. Heretofore, if I wanted to go, I went to the Smets website on my home computer, clicked on "get tickets", selected my seat for a map, (good practice for SU), pressed the button to pay for it, got an E-Mail with a link back to the website to press a print button and got a paper ticket. Then to the car and off I go. Today, I got referred to the MiLB app on my phone. I had to look up the password, which the app did not accept. I then clicked on "forgot your password? (no- you forgot it!), and set up a new password. I had to type it and my E-mail address, (multiple times), on the tiny keyboard on my phone rather than on the full-size keyboard on my home computer. I then tried to download the ticket to the phone and got a message "This ticket cannot be viewed or printed in this application. Please go to the box office or contact customer service for more information." I drove to the ballpark without a ticket, even though I'd paid for it. At the ticket window, the lady there didn't believe that I couldn't print out the ticket at home. Her supervisor said that, (in mid-season), they'd decided not allow that any more. He couldn't believe my phone app couldn't download it. He gave me an old-fashioned paper ticket and I went through security and was allowed into the stadium.

Despite the hassles, It's always a big moment of the year when I settle into my seat at the ball park with a coke and one of those chicken tender baskets for the first time each year. Winter is finally over!
I wondered about an ad on a section of the right field fence that was a couple feet high and just said WET BASEMENTS! without telling us what to do about them. There were a couple of tiny, unreadable logos to either side of it. The top 75% of the section was empty: maybe they didn't have enough money to pay for a full-size ad due to their wet basements. It was fun watching the kids play, tumbling down the fake lawns on either side of the field and to walk around the park, seeing the game from various angles.

The Smets got clobbered 4-10 but it was a fun game to watch anyway. It was Syracuse bloopers vs. Iowa ropes and homers. Brennan Davis of the Cubs hit a ball off the top of the scoreboard that was estimated at 430 feet. BJ Murray hit two shots to right field. There was a play in the second inning that confused me. David Bote of the Cubs hit a screaming triple to right. Syracuse's Ben Gamel slammed into the wall trying to catch it and was on the ground for several seconds. A Syracuse player ran into the area, grabbed the ball and uncorked a 300+ foot strike to home plate that drew oohs and aahs and held a runner on third. I had the transistor radio on and I thought they said this was Acuna, who I therefore thought was in center field. But he was our second baseman. Trace Thompson was our center fielder. Their names are not similar. It could be that Acuna ran to right field from second base to make that play.

Acuna's not hitting much, (.226: he'd fit in well with the big league club, where everyone is hitting that). They say he's a sucker for the low and outside pitch, (how often are you going to hit that hard and fair?) But he's Flash on the basepaths. He stole second and a hurried throw wound up in center field and Acuna wound up at third. He beat out a ground ball, forcing a wild throw late in the game. The radio guy said that he turns the other team into a T-ball defense with his speed. He's an exciting guy with great genes who still has to learn to hit.

Let’s talk about the Syracuse Mets a bit.

They just split a 6 game series with Scranton. Scranton is the NY Yankee AAA affiliate. These are the two best teams in the International League by a wide margin. Right now, Scranton is 32-19 and a half game up on the 31-19 Syracuse team. Should be a good race for the pennant.

I am thinking Brett Baty is about to get sent down to Syracuse, where he can play a lot and figure things out. I suspect part of the reason he has struggled in MLB is because he was rushed a bit to the big leagues. As of right now, he has only played in 32 AAA games in his career. Vientos has over 200 in AAA.

Give Baty a ton of at bats in Syracuse, give him a chance to work on the things he is having problems with at the big league level and maybe move him back up in August. And see what Vientos can do playing every day at 3B.

I believe Drew Gilbert is about to come off the IL and start playing against for Syracuse. He should be fun to watch. Acuna got off to a bad start but has his BA over .250 now and appears to have made the adjustmenus necessary to do well in AAA. Butto is doing really well in AAA. Got another win today and his ERA is down to 1.13 or thereabouts. He is probably wondering what he needs to do to be in the starting rotation for the NY Mets. I am too.

There are obviously problems with the relief pitching up in NY, Nunez appears to be the guy most ready to be called up and he already has been up and did pretty well. Throws close to 100 MPH. Very good stuff. Hs struggled with control but that looks a lot better these days.

Hopefully Vasil and Hamel get things straightened out. They have pitched well at times but have been inconsistent so far in AAA.

The problem with the big club is that all players have slumps but the Mets seem to have entire sectors of the team have slumps at the same time. Either we can't score because everybody's hitting .220 or suddenly our bullpen can't get anybody out. These guys know how to play the game and appear to be healthy. they've just got to remember how to hit and pitch.

I agree with giving Vientos a serious shot at 3rd base an having Baty play in the 'Cuse rather than sit on the bench in new York. I'm also amazed that Houser suddenly remembered how to pitch and gave us four good innings out of the bullpen.

5/31/24 - The Chiefs are the Mets now, (I call them the Smets)and they have just changed their system to be done on your phone, like the SU ticket, (for the purpose of driving me nuts, just like SU does).

I tried to order the tickets via the Milb app on my phone. I could log in with my E-Mail and a password I created several years back but had not had to use with my home computer. I went to the schedule, clicked on “Buy tickets” and asked for the seating chart, tried to select a seat with my finger but nothing registered. Then I tried to select another seat and it did register but I was told that I was isolating another seat. It was the second from the left at the bottom of section 208, where you can sit by yourself but with a small shelf in front of you for your food, drink and whatever else you brought. I sat in the extreme left hand seat in that section last time and found it cramped. I then selected second from the right in that section and it didn’t tell me that I had isolated anybody. My selected seat was in red. I hit the “save seat” button and then the ‘continue’ button and it returned me to the seating chart with my selected seat still in black. I reselected it multiple times with the same result.

I went to my home computer. I went to the Smets site, selected ‘schedule’, found the same game, clicked on ‘buy tickets’ and the seating chart my selected seat was in. I selected it again and was asked to log in. I typed in my e-mail address and my password appeared automatically. I was then told that one or both was incorrect. The e-mail address was OK and re-typed my password and it still didn’t like it, (even though I’d been able to log in on my phone). I clicked on “reset password” and was sent a temporary password which I used and then was asked to change it to a new password. I devised on and typed I it in – twice for the confirmation. I was then able to select the second from the right seat and pay for it. I did not get an E-mail acknowledging the purchase and no link to print the ticket so I copied the pages showing my purchase and one that had the box they scan, even though they probably won’t accept them. At least I can prove to the box office that I bought it. Then I thought to go back to my phone, press on the three short lines and “my tickets”. Whatd’ya know – my ticket with the ID box was there and there was a button to add it to my Apple wallet and it worked.

So buying the ticket on my phone was a train crash into a dumpster fire but buying it on my home computer made the bought ticket accessible on my phone and transferable to my digital wallet.

(Later, I found the E-Mail with the link to my ticket had been diverted to my “Junkmail” file for unknown reasons.)

I would consider getting the 10 pack of ticket vouchers they sell on line and at the box office. You get a booklet with 10 vouchers and you can convert them into tickets whenever you want. Just walk up to the box office and give them as many vouchers as you want tickets.

This is what I do each year. It is pretty low tech and the box office person will let you pick whatever seat(s) you want. I think you save some money doing it this way as well.

I was thinking of going to tonight's game but decided on Sunday's game instead. I'm glad I did.
