Ohio State especially plays an elite non-conference game literally every season except 2024 for some reason. This decade they played a home-and-home with Oregon, Notre Dame, Texas, and then they have Bama and Georgia coming up. If you go undefeated in a P4 conference, you're getting in the playoff regardless. But when you're say 10-2 and they have to put your resume under the microscope, those non-conference wins become significant.
