Ive been off this thread for a while but Im sort of confused as to this hockey/basketball comparison. You cannot really compare the two sports. They are too different. I used to play a lot of both and can say that the fact that basketball involves a lot of jumping whereas hockey has none of that greatly impacts the stresses upon the body. Getting lit up by a hard hit into the the boards does indeed render you sore the next day but you can play through that as just skating and executing basic hockey moves doesn't aggravate that. When you get sore in from basketball though, its often from wear and tear. Every step and jump hurts because the injury is aggravate by the most basic of basketball related motion. Its just constant impact. I think its more accurate to depict individual players in each sport as tough or soft rather than try and paint the entire sport as comprised of tough or soft players. There are certainly hockey players who will never go into a corner or take a hit to make a pass. That is soft stuff. There are tons of basketball players who ignore the pain in their joints and fight for rebounds while being elbowed play after play. William Nylander floats 90 percent of the time. he wont take a hit to make a play. He flies the zone before his team retains possession in the defensive end. Dude is the opposite of tough from a functional stand point. Then in the NBA you have a kid like Amen Thompson who is an energizer bunny. Up in you grill at all times, not giving you a foot of free space. deflecting, blocking, stealing. hes as tough as they come.
