Baseball is a sport where the journey matters as much as the destination… something the great SWC75 made me realize. I love watching new players evolve over the course of a year and as a result the team growing and changing over the course of the year. We know Lindor, Alonso and Soto will be there, but what unknowns will show up between now and October? Is Mauricio for real? Is Alvarez a fraud? Can Baty consistently prove he is not a quad-a guy? Is the Mets pitching magic machine for real? Can Vientos recover his form from last year? Will we see Gilbert called up? So many questions that make each game worth watching. I’m enjoying this team. I think Soto has been feeling the weight of his contract and possibly the weight of all those fancy meals he was taken out to during his recruitment. I think we will see the real Soto in the second half… remember Lindor had a stinker (by his standards) his first season. I continue to believe Nimmo is cooked because his body is wearing out on him. That contract is going to be an albatross. I will be shocked if McNeil is a Met 12 months from now. Too much young talent behind him and he is way too inconsistent on defense and offense. I think there is room for two of Vientos, Baty and Mauricio. My bet is Vientos is the odd man out… he will get the highest return in a trade because of his bat, but I prefer players who can do more than hit and I think Stearns feels the same. But this requires Baty to prove he belongs. Acuna’s speed and defense bring something to the team that no one else does… but man his hitting. Alvarez has been a bust to this point… I think he needs some time in the minors to figure it out. I really hope he isn’t another TdA… the talent is there, can the Mets unlock it? At some point Stearns needs to address the hitting strategy… too many Mets have underperformed with RISP for several years now and the main constant has been Chavez. And too many young Mets tank when they hit Queens. Something needs to change before the next wave of baby Mets hits NY. I love the bullpen but I fear they will be burnt to a crisp by October… we are getting more and more quality starts from the starters and that needs to continue. I can easily see a trade for a high leverage reliever in the next 8 weeks. This is a 100 win team that will only get better and younger over the next few years… think about where we were two years ago before they burned it down. What a rebuild by Stearns.
