Last offseason I was actually okay not bringing Pete back… not because he is a bad player or anything like that. But because I’ve held the belief for a few years now that the Mets core is rotten and Pete is an essential part of that core. For the last 4 years or so the Mets core has been Nimmo, Lindor, Alonso and McNeil. They have given us one amazing playoff run last year and complete inconsistency otherwise. When they were good they were pretty good (see the playoffs last year), but when they were bad they were really really bad (see the 2nd half of this year and the Padres series 2 years ago). Moving forward… the Nimmo and Lindor contracts are going to be 10 ton weights dragging this team down. Pete, probably does deserve to come back, but he needs a bunch of guys who can get on base consistently around him. They need to figure out what happens to their young talent when they reach Citi… how are all of their elite hitting prospects so bad in the majors? The pitching staff needs to be rebuilt (again)… they have two young stars. I don’t see it with Tong… hitters get way too much good contact on his stuff. Peterson could be a solid 5 guy… the Senga experiment has failed. Holmes is a solid 4/5 guy. Manea has gone back to sucking. The pen stinks. This is the worst I have felt going into a Mets off season in a long time. They need to completely rebuild a roster with $300mm+ in payroll commitments with a couple of huge albatross deals on it and I don’t think that’s possible in one or even two offseasons. I really don’t see a path forward here. Stearns has his work cut out for him but I have also lost my trust in him. Whatever magic he had in Milwaukee stayed in Wisconsin.
