For those who have an interest in midway news, or just have plain old nostalgia, NY should be getting a larger giant wheel in 2026. Either the 150' wheel or a 230' wheel that is shipping from Europe. Would love to see the 230' wheel as that would be even bigger than the famous Texas Star and would be far and away the largest portable wheel in North America. But even the 150' wheel is still 30' higher than the Strates Giant Wheel for those that might remember going back to pre-2014. Back story: the 150' wheel has its own circuit. It plays in Ocean City through mid-summer before going to the Minnesota State Fair (which has an independent midway). Minnesota's fair runs concurrent to the NY fair, and Wade signed a contract with Minnesota to use the wheel over NY because it was a better business deal. Can't really argue with the financials as Minnesota has much larger crowds (I think they average 150k/day). Now that a second (and larger) wheel is coming, that opens the door for the NYSF to get one of these wheels. Wade said it will come down to negotiation and this is where I am not optimistic. NY state and fair leadership in general just doesn't inspire my confidence. My guess is Wade will prefer to give NY the 150' and "upgrade" Minnesota. By the way, the point of this wasn't to compare portable wheels to permanent landmarks. The High Roller in Vegas which is the largest in the world or right up there is almost twice as high. But from a midway perspective and NY historical perspective, both Wade offerings would be better than anything we have seen on the midway locally. Their LED light shows are spectacular at night. Let's hope NY delivers on this.
