a) we win our bowl game in impressive fashion.  That likely puts us inside the top 20 for the final poll of the season.

b) we land a quarterback in the portal, and a few other pieces that are highly regarded and hit home with the college football world.

Like it or now, most people start with the last poll for the previous year when doing their preseason poll.  If a team finished the season ranked and has most of their key players returning, they are almost surely going to be ranked again.

If we lose to WSU in the Holiday Bowl and/or do poorly in the portal, we probably will not get ranked.

But right now there is a strong buzz about the program.  If we finish the season with a bowl win, get to 10 wins and get some more help from the portal, I would be shocked if we were not ranked in the preseason polls.

I think a lot of doubters became believers after the win over Miami.

We saw how hard it was to overcome starting the season without even a single vote in the preseason poll.

Finishing the year strong with a win in a bowl game where many key players (at least on Washington State) are not playing is kind of bogus.  But for the purpose of final impression, it is really important.

I think Coach Brown and Kyle McCord know this and it is a big reason Kyle is playing.
