https://cuse.com/news/2026/4/27/orange-stars-celebrated-at-20th-cuse-awards Another year of Syracuse student-athlete success was celebrated at the 20th annual 'Cuse Awards in the Schine Student Center. The event honored Orange teams and student-athletes for their achievement on the field, in the classroom and the community. Seniors Emma Eastman (women's cross country/track and field) and Cole Nordby (men's rowing) were selected as this year's Soladay Award winners, which is named for legendary athletics administrator Doris Soladay and is the highest honor presented annually by the Syracuse Athletics Department. This prestigious award is given to one male and one female senior or graduate student-athlete who exceeds expectations in their sport, classroom, community, and for their leadership. Soladay was the first and only director of athletics for women and then served as the senior woman administrator from 1981 through 1995 after the men's and women's athletics departments merged. Eastman is a 4.0 student pursuing a Master's degree in exercise science and is a multi-time All-ACC selection across cross country and track. Nordby, a chemical engineering student, is a two-time team captain of the men's rowing team. He was a member of the second varsity 8 last season that finished fifth at the IRA National Championships. Women's rowing's Abby Rockwood earned this year's Syracuse 8 Courage Award, which continues the legacy of the Syracuse 8. Rockwood, a senior on the women's rowing team, was diagnosed with acute leukemia. She immediately had to step away from the team to begin treatment and began fighting the cancer. She is planning to finish her degree and graduate with her class this spring amidst her fight. As always, the show concluded with the team of the year award. This year, the men's team of the year was presented to cross country, which returned to the podium at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2016. Led by head coach Brien Bell, 'Cuse finished fourth at the national championships after winning the NCAA Northeast Regional the week prior. The women's team of the year is Syracuse women's lacrosse. Playing one of the nation's most difficult schedules, the Orange are currently 13-5 under first year head coach Regy Thorpe and sit inside the top-10 of the national polls heading into the NCAA Tournament. Bell and Thorpe swept Coach of the Year honors as well. Bell was named ACC and USTFCCCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year, while Thorpe has the Orange on pace to be a top-eight national seed when the NCAA Tournament field is unveiled on Sunday. Record-setting attackman Joey Spallina was named Male Athlete of the Year. The leading scorer in the long and distinguished history of Syracuse men's lacrosse, Spallina passed multi-time Tewaaraton winner's record earlier this month. He'll lead the Orange into the ACC Tournament this weekend. Bo van Kempen, a finalist for the Honda Sports Award – the most prestigious individual honor in field hockey – was named Female Athlete of the Year. A First Team All-American and regional player of the year, she scored 23 goals this season, the second-most in a season in program history. Tomas Hut of men's soccer earned Male Performance of the Year. In the ACC Quarterfinal round against No. 4 NC State, Hut made a career-high nine saves in a crucial win or go home game to lead the Orange to a shutout win over the Wolfpack. Women's basketball's Laila Phelia earned Female Performance of the Year for a career-high 38 points in a 19-point road victory over a Virginia squad that reached the Sweet 16. Her teammate, Dominique Darius, earned Play of the Year after sinking a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer in triple overtime to lift Syracuse over Cal. One of the longest games in women's lacrosse history, Syracuse's four overtime thriller against Notre Dame earned Game of the Year. Caroline Trinkaus – last year's Female Rookie of the Year – ended the longest game in program history with her game-winning goal with one second left in the fourth overtime, to deliver another ranked win on Senior Day. A pair of All-Americans were honored with this year's rookie of the year honors. All-American and ACC Rookie of the Year Uche Izoje was this year's Female Rookie of the Year. The eight-time ACC Rookie of the Week and member of the All-ACC, All-ACC Defensive Team and All-ACC Rookie Team led the conference in blocks and was top-five in rebounds per game, in addition to her prolific scoring. Antoine Deslauriers, the first true freshman to lead the Syracuse football team in tackles in program history, earned the honor for the men's teams. Deslauriers was named a Freshman All-American. A bevvy of academic honors were also celebrated this year. Jadyn Burney (softball), Emma Eastman (cross country), Lilly Heaslet (soccer), Emma Klein (soccer), Leda Naihin (soccer) and Jasmine Nixon (soccer) were honored for having cumulative GPAs of 4.0. Men's rowing and women's soccer were honored with the Team GPA Awards, for the highest GPA among all Syracuse athletic programs this year.
