https://www.syracuse.com/orangelacrosse/2026/01/syracuse-mens-and-womens-lacrosse-back-at-practice-what-each-is-working-on-before-first-face-off.html Thorpe has a month to put the finishing touches on a new system and philosophy in camp before SU opens the season on Feb. 6 at the JMA Dome against No. 8 Maryland. “He really brings the energy and has so much hope in us and faith in us,” Syracuse defender Kaci Benoit said of Thorpe, “which is so exciting and gives us such amazing confidence within ourselves. It’s been really fun.” Syracuse is implementing a fast-paced, dynamic offensive attack led by new assistant coach Nicole Levy (a former Orange star). It is a system that is grounded in exploiting defenses with crisp ball movement and player cuts to expose shot opportunities in motion or on the crease. The Orange women lost leading scorer Emma Ward to graduation and high-scoring attack Olivia Adamson to the transfer portal (Northwestern) but returns several of its top scorers from last year, including Emma Muchnick, Caroline Trinkaus, Gracie Britton and Alexa Vogelman. Thorpe also shored up SU’s defense in the portal by adding Cece Webb from Virginia and Mackenzie Salentre from Albany to put in front of returning goaltender Daniella Guyette. The Orange also need to settle its rotation at draw control and adjust to new rules passed in the offseason that Thorpe believes will put an emphasis on special teams this season. Like Gait’s team, the schedule for Thorpe’s team will be one of the most challenging in the sport. Syracuse will face a total of 10 teams that made the 2025 NCAA Tournament on its schedule, including three of four (Boston College, Northwestern, North Carolina) that made the Final Four last season. We’re just a few weeks away from real college lacrosse games in Syracuse. For now, as Allen Iverson once famously said, “We’re talking about practice.”
