We had issues tackling yesterday but we were blown off the ball by the duke OL. The tackling issues were largely 4-6 yards downfield!

I would have thought we’d eventually stack the box, tighten up on the receivers and make them beat us deep. From what I could tell we never did that. I don’t understand why not.

I recognize it may not have helped btw and may have resulted in long runs or long passes, but what did we have to lose?

The number of times the LBs went into the wrong gap didnt help or the fact that the RB was able to add 3-5 yds on when the play a first stopped.

The Duke RBs were really patient, and then took off when they saw their opening.

They had time to be.

Tackling can be fixed. I think the defense is on the field too much and banged up. With injuries and an abundance of sophomores and freshmen playing, there will be lapses and fatigue contributing to plays given up to the opposing run. I still love the 3-3-5. We need Coley back, big hitter.

and that somehow if the WR catch the ball we still would have been ahead late in the game., that or we can run a QB sneak

I thought the combo of young LB’s and Cutcliffe’s experience was what doomed us yesterday.

I am not sure you need Cutcliffe or much coaching experience to see that our front 3 is undersized and our LBs are young. Teams with strong lines and good RBs are going to attack us with the run.
if we are going to defend with 3:3:5, at least two of the front 3 will need to be legit 300lb run stuffers.

Honestly, the majority of our guys seem undersized, it's actually quite daunting IMO. Sutomcat touched on this precise thing yesterday in his "take." From my perspective, we look nothing like a P5 team/roster. :(

I agree the youth at lb and dB hurts us in angles and tackling. That will get better over time. But the dL was still getting blown off the ball, we aren’t gonna fix that easily. There has to be a counter move in that case. What is it? Did we try it yesterday?

The change to the 3-3-5 puts a great deal of stress on the LBs, and these guys are young. Talented, physical, athletic, but young. Changing LBs is like changing QBs, and we’ve been in that mode for what 4straight years? I think these guys can be the best of the bunch, but it isn’t going to happen overnight.

I saw a lot of missed gaps by LBs and I don’t even feel qualified to make such a statement.

We still don’t have the personnel yet for the scheme. We’ll get there.

When you can't even pack the box against a pathetic awful QB who won't beat you its a problem.

But I chalk it up to a bad game. You don't watch this team every week if you didn't expect there to be a repeat of BC last year. Despite the impressive play vs Pitt and UNC from the D. Just sucks it was to winless Duke. We lost a ton of DL too this offseason I was wondering when that would rear its ugly head tbh.

Duke pulled the guard and tackle so often and it worked every time. They would be 2nd level blocking LBs or safeties consistently. The RBs would just wait, find the hole, and take off.

Im not going to comment too much because I have yet to see the game but I tried to tell some people on here that I didnt like what I saw. Has nothing to do with my belief in the scheme and players. I run this same type of scheme and Ive been seeing multiple guys in the wrong gap too often. That's a recipe for disaster no matter how aggressive you are. I was hoping we cleaned some of that stuff up along with the tackling. We obviously need to get bigger stronger and faster. With that said, its gonna be fine. it takes time. When we get there its gonna be really fun to watch teams try to figure out why they can't run the ball. They are gonna realize that there's 3 or 4 guys at the point of attack. Hard to count how many we are going to have in the box.

When you say missed gaps you have to understand that the gap assignments are assigned before the offense moves. It’s done by the way the other team lined up and your guessing what hole they will go to. If the offense reads that and changes the play you don’t have an experienced linebacker out there to change the defense to what they changed. A coach can’t call it in for the players to see once it started.
