If we are finding the program by the tournament alone, which I believe is the main argument of the tread than how do you define success using the tournament as the sole measuring stick? For me "elite" is defined over time but a per season basis view of the season solely by the result of the NCAA can define the season and inform the "elite" question. For me the tournament is a per weekend event if you lose in the 16sweet or the elite8 there is little to no difference. Monday morning the season is over and no one is talking about your team. The tourney is basically a 3 weekend 3 mini-tournament event. So here is a simple basic scale to define the a season by the tournament only.

Not making the tournament = Bad year
Making the tournament =An average year
Making the sweet 16 = A good year
Making the final 4 = A great year
Winning the tournament = A historic year

The question is: What is the average result required to be elite over a 20 or so year period? And how many schools meet that criteria?
