This video shows some serious incompetence by the officials yesterday:

Marquette at Syracuse - Jan. 7, 2012 - Blown 3-Second Call

This was the play that ended with Fab Melo elbowing Jamil Wilson before Jae Crowder scored on a putback. SU's lane comes into view with 32 seconds left on the shot clock. At this point Wilson is battling for position in the middle of the key and he never leaves the lane during the entire possession. Marquette's 3-point attempt came with 18 or 19 seconds on the shot clock, so Wilson was in the lane for at least 13 seconds.

You'll also see an example of Marquette's "pulling guard" offense when Wilson shoved Melo with about 22 seconds left on the shot clock.

I believe the official under the hoop (Tim Higgins, naturally) is responsible for noticing these things.

Nice find. That'll be one nice thing about the ACC, no Higgins.

Wow. That's horrid officiating. No wonder Higgins missed the elbow. He had tuned out the game entirely. Marquette could have pitched a tent and had s'mores.

The non 3 second call is bad enough...but watching the Marquette player two handed shove Melo out of the lane was criminal. I don't blame Melo at all for the elbow. If the refs won't call the three seconds or the blatent shove, its time to protect yourself.

wow that is some serious right there. Good ole Higgins right there on the play too. Dont tell me that the BE office isnt trying to give SU and PITT and nice send off.

Looking at that again, Melo's elbow thing was so quick- the guy went down like he was shot. I wonder if he was faking it to get Melo out of the game.

No way he was faking! Nobody could time their fall that well! Those quick elbows that you are not expecting hurt the most!

Feb 14, 2010 at the Dome there were seven plays where Tim Higgins failed to call 3 seconds on Louisville players. I gave the exact time in the game along with how many seconds the Cardinal player remained in the lane here on the board. I also calculated how many points they got in those possessions and the ensuing fouls on us that were crucial. The game ended up 66-60. On those non 3 second calls there was at least a 10 point swing affected.

Tim Higgins and Jim Burr have proven time & again that their time to retire is long over due. For the good of the game guys, give it up!

Marquette's beer league centers were just trying to frustrate Melo. That's basically all they could do, I don't blame them one bit. Irritating but smart coaching. It's unfortunate that dumb and dumber put their blinders on every game and blow calls.

Can't remember the last time I saw a 3 second call in ANY college game. I have seen more palming the ball calls!!! I can understand refs being lenient and making the call at 4+ secs, but that was rediculous. Wilson spent so much time in the paint that he might as well had his mail forwarded to the Carrier Dome.

Yeah, it was definitely a flagrant elbow by Melo. Agree with the OP though. 13 seconds is a LONG time to miss a lane violation call. Missed the shove of Melo. Missed the shove of Triche. Missed the elbow BY Melo, until they went to the tape. So if they missed all of that, what were they watching?

To play devils advocate, he does get out of the lane 7 seconds into the video. After that he is in the lane for more than 3, but he is not in the lane for 13 seconds straight...

Watching that play reinforces to me how poor the elbowing rule is. The elbow foul occurs. No whistle is blown. Marquette proceeds to score. Play is then stopped. The foul is retroactively called on Melo. The basket (that happened after the foul) still counts, and Marquette still gets the free throws. I don't understand how the foul can be called retroactively, just because it's an elbow.

Does SU have the opportunity to file any sort of complaint about the officiating in that game. Not so much from the protest stand point, but from the can someone instruct/educate the officials so that they correct these mistakes in future games.

I am still convinced that they screwed up the administration of the technical on Melo. Just can't see how you can call a technical in that situation where play did not stop at the point of the foul that was later determined to be the technical. If you are going to roll back the clock and assess the technical than the points on the subsequent put back have to come off the board.

I agree with CuseCrew that he did enough to get out of the lane midway through the sequence even though he wasn't technically out of the lane. But he was in more than 3 seconds both before and after that.
