1- Dungey- I don't believe Dungey should have returned after that hit he took. He was clearly knocked out and was unconscious for a very short period of time. Not to mention that he threw the ball perfectly all day and once he comes back in he has two of his worst throws of the day which resulted in pics. With head injuries the way they are, I believe Dungey should have sat the rest of the game. It would have hurt our chances to win but it was the right thing to do for Dungey. One last thing on Dungey, I love the touch he has on the ball. With that said however, I would like to see him put a little more zip on the sideline throws. Im worried they are going to start getting pic'd, he puts so much air under them and they take forever to get out their. With a little more zip, he will not only decrease the chance of interceptions, but even give the wideouts a chance to make a play once they catch the ball. Currently, our guys are being tackled almost instantly because the defender has so much time to react. Just one small gripe, otherwise he continues to get better and better, just needs to avoid the big hits.
2- Defense- It seems like our guys really struggle to get off of blocks and continually take poor angles. 2nd and 18, Pitt runs a draw, we have james tackled for a 3 yard loss, somehow gets away from clark. You would think that as long as clark had him wrapped up for someone else would be able to come in and clean it up, instead he runs for 17 yards. They proceed to get a first down and a touchdown on this drive. We finish that and we have 3rd and 21, most likely a punt rather then a TD. All in all, our defensive backfield played better. Glad they finally decided to bench Wigham, its been a long time coming. I believe Hodge may be the next one that needs to be replaced. Iv always expected more out of him and he never seems to make as big of an impact as I would like. One play sticks out so badly, it occurred in the 3rd quarter. He comes in free on a read option, he ducks his shoulder and drops his head. He doesn't make contact with the QB or RB and they gain a big chunk. Undisciplined tackling, unfortunately, that is more the norm when it comes to tackling.
3- The play calling at the end of the first half was baffling. Pooch kickoff which the guy returns to the 40. Yes I understand Boyd is back their and he is dangerous but at least squib it, the pop up to the 25 just doesn't work. It wasn't even pooched to a lineman, which maybe would have made sense. But then a poor call by the officials on Horton imo (I believe he was already going to make the tackle prior to the guy being down, therefore no call should have been made), they get an extra 15 yards. Then we allow a 15 yard scramble and then a prevent coverage allows Boyd to get a 20 yard catch down to the 13. That was a killer going into the half. We put together an excellent drive and go up 17-10 going into half, yet somehow Pitt is able to drive down with 20 seconds left and put an end to any momentum we had going into the half. That was a real killer for me.
Lastly the refs were trash, I don't believe I have ever seen 3 calls reversed post review in a game, let alone in a 10 play sequence. The spots were just not very good and they looked foolish one too many times. Not to say that is why we lost, they were inept on both sides of the ball; they missed calls everywhere all day.\
PSSSS- I just have to comment on the fake punt by Pitt. How does Syracuse not call a timeout when Pitt runs a gunner in motion to the left side of the field, therein leaving two gunners on the left and no-one on the right side. When has any team ever had two gunners on the same side and no gunners on one side. When their is a punt block formation the gunners move in but don't change sides, their is always generally one gunner on each side. This should have been an immediate timeout, you have to know something is up at that time.
