Comparison for Cutcliffe would be to Marrone or Coach Mac...not what Shafer inherited.

You're definitely right. Wasn't the whole idea of hiring from within the staff is because we wanted to keep things rolling from what Marrone built. This wasn't a total rebuild job. The foundation was set.

The team that Shafe is forced to put out there due to injuries -- at least on offense -- is akin to just about any of the worst units Marrone had to put out there.

My god comparing Cutcliffe to Shafer is not a fair assessment. Duke FB didn't go to a bowl from 1994 till 2012.
Shafer took over a program coming off 2 bowls in 3 years. If Shafer took over for Gerg Robinson your post could be fair. Cutcliffe IS WAY better at preparing his team, scouting for his team and playing to his teams strengths than Shafer.

Doug did a great turnaround job here - just like he's doing now in Buffalo. Too bad he lost interest in the job.

Shafer also inherited a new conference with a step up in competition. Marrone picked a great time to go...

Why not? Marrone's recruiting was average. His coaching is what got him where he is.

His coaching also helped reignite a program from a coach that (G)rob-ed football into a horrible, lose-to-Akron program. Shafer has had much stronger tailwinds than what Marrone, Mac and Cutcliffe had.

I think it's easier to take a team from Grob level incompetence to .500 than to take a .500 team to 11 wins, IMO.

This is only his second year as head coach. Say what you want but Marrone did not leave us with 4 and 5 star talent. He won with his coaching ability from the NFL. It will take Shafer time to figure it out, just like any new head coach in his position. If we can keep the 2015 recruiting class intact we will improve. Think back to the GRob era and think what would have happed if we had to utilize our 4th string QB and had 11 starters and 2nd string players injured. Penn State or USC would have put up 100 points on us. I am not saying settle for mediocrity I am only saying give Shafer a chance to adapt.

So you are saying it is easier to return a team from the Depths Of Hell that to go from .500 to 11 wins.

Totally disagree.

I think people forget to what depths he sank this program to.

Completely agree. Marrone did it in 2 years and brought the program to where it was, and slightly better, than the 3 years prior to Grob even being here. The program wasn't where people want to say it was, the record was. It is much harder to now go from a .500 program to 9 or 10 win seasons. Much harder.

Marrone knew there was a lot of hard work on the horizon IMO, definitely took an opportune time to cash in on his reputation.
