The 76ers play in an arena sponsored by Wells Fargo. The name ended up on the building because of a series of bank acquisitions over the last 20 years, but Wells Fargo does not do any other sponsoring with the 76ers. The team has decided they're not going to give Wells Fargo free publicity and has stopped using the name.

When was the last time Carrier spent a dime on us, let alone put thousands out of work. And we just keep saying their name. I think the Cuse should just start calling it "The Dome".

Yeah, I wonder what the contract states in terms of actually calling the dome The Carrier Dome.

This is very likely a different situation. For pro teams/arenas these are typically for a fixed duration (10-years, 20-years, etc.). In the SU case this is was a building naming gift, similar to Manley Field House or the Ensley Athletic Center. For building naming gifts these names rarely, if ever, change. A complete refurbishment may be grounds to seek a new naming gift. Perhaps Carrier would re-up.

BTW, this subject has been discussed here many, many times.

So a new, interesting angle on an issue that could relate to us needs to be tagged as "been discussed many, many times" when I've stopped coming to this message board because it's become exclusively about poorly interpreted stats, 44 discussions that go in circles, and people constantly rehashing well-entrenched positions.

Why does it have to be a naming gift? Why use a brand name if they're not going to have a presence with Syracuse athletics? Or why not sell sponsorship on top of it the building's name is not changeable- "The Pyramid Companies Carrier Dome."

Why does it have to be a naming gift?

It has to be a naming gift because that is what it was. Carrier agreed to donate money and in return, SU agreed to name the building after the company. It's pretty simple and not sure why people don't get the difference between this and temporary naming rights that are common now but not back in 1979-80.

The only party that can allow a change is Carrier and they won't do it without the incentive needed. The problem is, any incentive SU could give Carrier is likely too expensive and not profitable for SU. Stalemate.

If a part of the Dome was "destroyed" and refurbished couldn't we argue in the contract the building is new and thus we could rename it if we wanted too.

SU to UTC: Hey UTC, we are gutting and refurbishing the Dome, we want to open up talks about new naming rights. <Phone clicks>

2nd Call SU to UTC: Hey UTC don't hang up yet...so as I said, we are gutting and refurbishing the Dome, we want to open up talks about new naming rights. We have contacted Trane Air Conditioning and they are super interested in being the official A/C of the new Carrier Dome...isn't that cool? The "Elmira Express Trane" comes out after every touchdown...Get it, Trane for Train, cute, huh? Oh yeah, BTW, we fired The Cool Kid so we think that Trane will run more often than last year. So are you guys ok with that?

Yes, I have always agreed that embarrassing Carrier may be the only option.

Not sure you can refurbish a building that was destroyed. I am sure if the building was destroyed to a degree that it needs to be replaced with a new structure, the naming rights of the new building could be sold.

Yeah I don't think much can be done here with regards to changing the name, even if there was a complete refurbishment of the Dome. A lot of ethical issues related to fundraising come into play here. Without knowing the details of the original gift agreement, I would speculate that it's pretty air-tight. SU has never been one to shy away from getting as much money as possible out of all of their various entities. If they were able to get a huge influx of new money for renaming the Dome, they would have done it a long time ago.

Notre Dame's basketball facility was called Joyce Center until in 2009 they renovated the arena and now call it Purcell Pavilion. We could copy that idea and call it whatever named we wanted at the Carrier Dome.

Like Alumni Field in the Carrier Dome.

Or Ernie Davis Legends Field.

It's already named 'Ernie Davis Legends Field'

Joyce Center had been named in honor of a priest. ... not based on an agreement resulting from a gift. No real legal issues in changing the name. Again, another scenario different than the dome's.

It was called the Joyce center to honor the Rev. Edmund Joyce, who was Executive VP of the school for 35 years. It wasn't because of a gift and there wasn't anything binding to keep it named that in perpetuity. Apples and oranges.

It's actually called the Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.

Never anger a priest.

I know about the field being named after Ernie Davis I was just using a generic example. We should push that name on the broadcasts over Carrier Dome.

Boeheim Court for basketball and Davis Field for football.

True...the entire building complex is still called "Joyce Center" and one of its components is an arena named Purcell Pavilion.

team, 76ers etc are all single nouns. the proper pronoun is it and possessive noun is its

If the structure of the dome is "significantly changed", Syracuse has the right to open up bids for sponsorship again. SUA took a bogus deal back in the day, and basically gave Carrier naming rights forever for about $3 million.
