The annual paintball event between coaches and players takes place Friday morning before the team heads back to Syracuse.

Then it's two more weeks of practice before the season opener Sept. 4 against Rhode Island.

Shafer laid out the schedule for the next several days.

The team will hold practice twice on Saturday and have a special teams-heavy practice Sunday at the Carrier Dome.

With the core group of contributors mostly known at this stage of the preseason, next week's practices will feature the early stages of preparing for Rhode Island.

"There's not a whole lot of new installation going on," Shafer said. "A little bit on defense. We're done on offense with the installation, minus any gameplan we put in.

"Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we'll have three good days of Rhode Island prep."

Paintball is fun, and it's technically a "day off" but man, it's so not a day off - I've never had a harder leg workout than the one and only time I played paintball (I was in the best shape of my life at the time, too). Holy hell, I could barely walk the rest of the day from all the crouch/running.

This is basically a way to say to any naysayers who might think "They should be working out instead!" - trust me, if you've never played, paintball can be a hell of a workout.
