Shafer: Having spring practice earlier than usual allowed for three extra weeks of strength & conditioning work...
Shafer: Staff research showed last year was "one helluva freakish year" regarding injuries. No major changes in how camp will be conducted.
Shafer: Ashton Broyld is finishing up school work but "was dismissed for violation of team policies".
Shafer likens Hunt's injury-forced booth time to his own experience as a player. Game slows, opportunity to learn, mature, miss the game.
Injuries: Lasker (shoulder) doing well, practicing with limits. J. Green (walk-on TE) tore ACL playing basketball and "will not be with us".
Shafer on athlete Brisly Estime, who missed most of '14: "Looks great, body looks wonderful, killed all the testing. He's ready to roll."
Shafer on Express Back position: will line up as TE, slot receiver and in backfield. Multi-talented. Phillips, Lewis, Strickland, Perkins.
Shafer on safeties: Cordy (converted CB) is a natural. Fits in nicely at either spot w/o much classroom time. Scissum back. Frosh may mix.
Shafer on Ft. Drum: 1) Gives back to military. 2) Players meet those who've served. 3) "a chance to be trained by the world's greatest military".
Hunt on Broyld: loss has been tough. Thought of him as a brother. But "I've got other guys to worry about." Shows no concern abt position.
Hunt on SO WR Steve Ishmael: "He never says 'no'... His drive is everything." Pair frequently hooks up for routes after workouts.
LB Zaire Franklin's turn. Rare to have a sophomore given as much exposure but he's well suited for it. Confident.
Franklin on message: "Last year's over. I'm kind of tired of talking about it to be honest with you. We're looking forward to Rhode Island."
Franklin: "Ron (Thompson) is the most important person on our defense... Tremendous athlete." Zaire talks like a coach.
