From 12:00 to 12:45 Coach Shafer, Hunt and Franklin will be available to the Media. Tomorrow is the first day of camp.

Is it just me or is that a really quick media day. I can't recall how it used to go but seems like it was more than 45 minutes.

Disclaimer (because you need them here these days) : I'm not complaining, just observing.

Maybe I should have a different title... more like "The day the media gets to ask a few questions of one coach and two players". And you are right in the past they have had more players and coaches available for questions.

I'd like it more too - but coming off a 3-9 season - seems like it strikes the right tone. Less talk, more practice.

Well there is no practice today. First practice is tomorrow.

Shafer opens: "I know @BrentAxeMedia wants me to hit the podium, but I'm not gonna."

Shafer said he has sat down with AD Mark Coyle and believes in the plan Coyle has in place for all of SU Athletics.

Shafer said hybrid Erv Philips has put on some good weight. May have added speed, too.

Shafer said the program is still waiting to hear word from the NCAA in safety signee Marquise Blair.

Shafer said OG/OT Michael Lasker had surgery on his shoulder and will participate partially to start the year. Should be full-go in 3 weeks.

Shafer asked if there's any pressure with a new AD in Mark Coyle. "None at all."

Shafer said walk-on TE Jacob Green is out for the year. He tore his ACL playing pickup basketball.

Shafer also mentioned TE Tyler Provo as a guy who was nicked up. All in all, the team is very healthy moving into camp. That's important.

Shafer gives the expressback another shoutout. Doesn't want to give too much away tactically, though.

Shafer says Dontae Strickland will get some work in at hybrid during preseason camp. Lined up on the wing a bunch in HS.

Shafer talking about Fort Drum. Like that he isn't drawing parallels to football. Wants his players to see how much work soldiers put in.

Shafer: Having spring practice earlier than usual allowed for three extra weeks of strength & conditioning work...

Shafer: Staff research showed last year was "one helluva freakish year" regarding injuries. No major changes in how camp will be conducted.

Shafer: Ashton Broyld is finishing up school work but "was dismissed for violation of team policies".

Shafer likens Hunt's injury-forced booth time to his own experience as a player. Game slows, opportunity to learn, mature, miss the game.

Injuries: Lasker (shoulder) doing well, practicing with limits. J. Green (walk-on TE) tore ACL playing basketball and "will not be with us".

Shafer on athlete Brisly Estime, who missed most of '14: "Looks great, body looks wonderful, killed all the testing. He's ready to roll."

Shafer on Express Back position: will line up as TE, slot receiver and in backfield. Multi-talented. Phillips, Lewis, Strickland, Perkins.

Shafer on safeties: Cordy (converted CB) is a natural. Fits in nicely at either spot w/o much classroom time. Scissum back. Frosh may mix.

Shafer on Ft. Drum: 1) Gives back to military. 2) Players meet those who've served. 3) "a chance to be trained by the world's greatest military".

Hunt on Broyld: loss has been tough. Thought of him as a brother. But "I've got other guys to worry about." Shows no concern abt position.

Hunt on SO WR Steve Ishmael: "He never says 'no'... His drive is everything." Pair frequently hooks up for routes after workouts.

LB Zaire Franklin's turn. Rare to have a sophomore given as much exposure but he's well suited for it. Confident.

Franklin on message: "Last year's over. I'm kind of tired of talking about it to be honest with you. We're looking forward to Rhode Island."

Franklin: "Ron (Thompson) is the most important person on our defense... Tremendous athlete." Zaire talks like a coach.

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 1m1 minute ago

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 44s45 seconds ago
Shafer: "Hunt was anxious to stay involved, Coach Lester did a great job... re-teaching him the game of football."

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 2m2 minutes ago
Shafer: "It probably helped his (Hunt's) maturation a ton."

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 50s50 seconds ago

"Expressback" is going to stay as a term for the former SU "H-back." #Expressback

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 51s52 seconds ago
Shafer: "We're not looking back."

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 1m1 minute ago
Shafer: "We're looking forward to Ron Thompson having a great season... Pleased with his improvement at end this spring."

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 45s46 seconds ago
Shafer: #Expressback will do things from wing alignment off tackle, off tight end, move to slot, work him back into backfield in two-back.

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 53s53 seconds ago
Shafer: "Strickland will probably learn some H-back as well."

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 2m2 minutes ago
Shafer: "I was pleased with Cordy coming up from Florida... We'd like to give you a shot at one of these safeties."

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 3m3 minutes ago
Shafer: "(Cordy) does a nice job breaking on the ball, without a lot of time with the coaches."

SUJuice.com ‏@TheJuiceOnline 4m4 minutes ago
Shafer: "When I look at our secondary... we have some competition at those two positions (cornerback)."
