During ESPN's Around the Horn, they asked if losing to a 15 seed has damaged Izo's reputation at all. The consensus was that his whole body of work speaks for itself, so no. If that is the case, why is SU lose to a 15 seed always brought up when upsets are discussed? Did Coach K's lose a few years ago change that thinking?

does it get brought up as much anymore? it was brought up every year for awhile because jb had developed a reputation for 1st round flameouts. but its kinda died down in the last few years since we havent lost a 1st round game in 10 years.

i suppose the real story here was that MSU was generally felt to be snubbed of a #1 seed (and i agree) and was going to come out guns blazing and prove the selection committee wrong. that just totally blew up in their face. tough loss.

Now, when they talk about upsets in future NCAA tournaments, the MSU-MTSU game will be highlighted, one would assume.

i doubt it. we will never escape that sting ...

Nothing is as memorable as the first time.

Eh, not so much. First time is usually pretty awkward and over far too quickly. :p

It's now not even listed in the top 3 biggest 15 vs. 2 upsets, (or probably in the top 5, for that matter).

I was on my way home from Myrtle Beach with one of the biggest douches I've ever met in my life the night SU lost to Richmond. It was a long, long 18 hours in the car. And then when I got home found the basement had flooded because it went to 80 degrees a couple of days in Syracuse and melted a shite ton of snow. That is a year I would love to have a redo with.

They never led at any point in a game against a 15-seed. That's not a tough loss; that's an embarrassment.

Crazy to think that after Hampton knocked off Iowa State we went 11 years without it happening again...and then there've been four since.

I don't understand why that reputation developed. I only remember the following 1st round losses in the 64+ tournament era:

1991
1999
2005
2006

Am I forgetting any?

Four Hall of Fame coaches have lost as 2 seeds to 15 seeds: Boeheim, Olson, Coach K, and Izzo.

Every time a new loss occurs it diminishes the stain of the others.

Post 1985 that's it.

I think the 2nd round upsets played into it a bit too. Especially 1986, 88 and maybe 92.

Not that I wanted to go this way down memory lane.

The good news is that our debacle is now considered the least "big" or noteworthy/significant loss of the 16 listed here:

I doubt Syracuse was favored in the 2nd round game against UMass in 1992.

You're probably right there. For some reason I always want to think we were the 3 seed to UMass' 6 in that matchup.

BTW...Tom Izzo since winning the title has lost in the first round five times (2002, 2004, 2006, 2011, and 2016.

Can you fu)king imagine the narrative if JB lost in the first round five times since 2000?

That might have been the dumbest discussion I have ever heard. He was due for an upset. Jb has been upset, so has Coach K and Bob Knight, The more you are in the tourney, eventually someone is going to sneak up to get you.

Heck around here ALMOST any NCAA lost is criticized. (short bench, over playing starters, not "developing" players, exclusive use of the zone, weak OCS, etc)

Something about Myrtle Beach that time of year... For me, it was the Vermont loss. We finally rolled into town for our annual golf trip after making the long drive, and the SU Vermont game was winding down, but instead of switching to that game, we had to suffer through a Duke 1st round blow out on whatever network was showing it. Gotta love tobacco row. So I had to suffer through the whole weekend after that loss in stunned fashion, the end of Hak's career being shown over and over on the big screens for god knows how long. Tom Brennan cashed in on that for years. That might be the last epic upset we've endured though, and let's hope that was JBs last.

That is true, but he's also got 5 final fours in that time (and 7 overall). That being said, even if JB had 7 final fours in the last 15 years or whatever it is, he'd still get crushed on here for those first round flameouts.

Yeah, Izzo has a lot of goodwill built up from those FF s

About the only good thing that happened that night was that Kansas lost right after we did so I didn't have to hear any trash talking from Jayhawk fans here in KC for very long.
