"Immediately there was a lot of response and a lot of excitement," Shafer said. "I'm really excited for our senior class. They've put their blood, sweat and tears on that practice field and in the Dome. I was just happy to be playing another game. I was excited to see where it would be. It was great to see Minnesota and the Big Ten."
 
Among the week's festivities that he most eagerly anticipated, Shafer mentioned the Rodeo Bowl, an event held on Dec. 23 that kick-starts Syracuse's scheduled time in Houston.
In that event, named by Sports Illustrated as one of the best bowl activities, the teams will compete against each other in traditional rodeo events. Shafer, who like many coaches doesn't like to delve too deeply into game plans in advance, didn't mind sharing what he had formulated for Houston.  "Some of our players get a chance to [U]lasso some calves or something[/U]," Shafer said. "I've already got a short list. Josh Kirkland might be good at that coming out of Kansas. Drew Allen, we might need him to teach these guys how to tie a lasso as well as throw a lasso. He'll be a big part of the game-plan there."
