Please. Obviously insanely happy about the win, and this is somewhat looking through a microscope, but if he were to just take whats given to him and move the ball (unless a much smaller guy is on him), I think we’d look even better on offense. More of the freshman and sophomore Buddy may help this team even click more offensively. Anyways…

I hate when he turns his back 180 degrees from the basket. The possession rarely ends well when that happens. The backdown is often ok when he doesn't get completely turned around but once he is facing the opposition basket it seems the chance of a turnover or a poor shot goes up rapidly.

More Buddy more Cowbell

His dribble gets too high and erratic when he does the turn. It's too easy to knock the ball away.

Same stuff every year ..

Opponent bad backdown good
Opponent good backdown bad
Opponent middling backdown hit or miss

I would like to see improvement in his passing out of this situation. Buddy has scored a ton of points this year on that backdown and I think we forget that because the non successful is much louder than the unspectacular little turn around that goes in. But set him down in front of some old Chris Mullin and Larry Bird highlights of them passing out of the back down to round out his game.....and we’ve got something.

i agree 100%

not sure any team in college basketball has all 5 starters average double figs...that balance is a real threat. finally seems that they are exploiting it well...in my opinion this team can get a great shot almost every possession

JB said in NC state that thats the best the offense can play but I think the offense can be even better

obviously there will be some mental errors here and there...but decision making is the area where the offense can get even better

I think t boils down to ---

instead of exploiting the best matchup for the best 1 on 1 ---

using the mismatches to pressure the defense into giving up a great shot - like you see with the jesse slams off pick and roll

the 1 on 1 iso does work somewhat but it lets the defense off the hook a lot too

these teams cant cover all 5 players, generally - need to exploit that as a team...and get wide open shots not contested ones like the backdowns

I disagree here. If Buddy backs down a smaller player good things often happen. The key here is that the last few games Buddy has been kicking the ball out of backdowns to create open treys or a Jesse dunk. He was not doing that earlier in the season. His assist totals have greatly improved the last three games. He has now averaged 5 assists per game over his last three, probably a first for him. This is what he needs to keep doing.

A much smaller guy, fine. If he can get to the shot, I usually like the chances. But often he is stripped trying to back in. We honestly don’t see this from any other player in the country. It’s really weird offense. Closest thing is probably Gillespie on the block against a smaller guard. Maybe Buddy can try and do that instead? Limit the dribbling.

Buddy had a total of 7 turnovers in those last three games. No way to say how many occurred when was backing opponents down. If we hypothetically assume 4 of the 7 occurred on back downs, that is more than a fair trade off for his averaging 5 assists per game during that stretch. Point is, the offense flowed and buddy was a big part of that instead of being a shot forcing black hole as we have too often seen.
