While converting about a hundred priceless (to me) old VHS tapes to digital, I came across one that was special from an SU standpoint. Late 1980's, a one-day basketball clinic that my oldest attended, at West Genny if I recall. It was run by JB and the staff was Sherm, Herm Harried, and Howard Triche. I recalled the clinic but didn't recall that I had videotaped it.

While running the unlabeled tape through my A to D converter, there suddenly was a very young Jim Boeheim talking to the kids. My son was instructed on rebounding from Herm, on defense from Howard, and on dribbling from Sherm. Lots of drills and a lot of fun to watch again.

I always liked to remind my son that although Sherman Douglas thought him to dribble, it was I who taught him how to hook with his free arm plus other forms of malfeasance. I mean, let's remember what skills are really important, right?

If you ain't cheating you ain't really trying.

do you have a recommendation for converters. DIY or go to a pro. becuz i have a lot of old vhs games including the championship on tape which i'd love to convert.
(altho if vhs is like vinyl it'll all come back again in ten yrs.)

It depends upon how many you want to convert. I had a bunch of old 8mm videos that were beyond my ability. I took them to a local place and had a grownup do it for me. I can do VHS conversions as well as they can, however.

It goes without saying that you need a working VCR for all of this.

Not sure how much commercial places are charging currently for VHS conversions. Your break even expense would depend upon the number of tapes plus how much time and effort you wanted to put into the whole thing yourself.

I had a couple of interfaces over the years with their own software and they worked great. However, the manufacturers didn't update their software as new versions of WIN were launched and eventually, they no longer worked.

There are a number of interface and software packages out there at very reasonable prices but most of them seem to come with online reviews complaining about compatibility. They may work or they may not with Win 11. Not sure about IOS.

I currently use a self-contained interface by a company called Digitnow. They make several and I have the more expensive one. It is an interface with an HD screen, etc. No computer necessary. It records to an SD card, which you can then copy to your computer, or play back on the unit itself, or play on your TV via an HDMI cable. I move my digitized copies from the SD card to my computer and do redundant backups to an external SSD as well as the cloud. That part is just me because many of the videos are of family members no longer with me, so to me they are priceless.

I hate to say it but I tossed all my old SU games when I was cleaning out my boxes of VHS tapes. I thought long and hard, but most were available on the internet. All of the tapes I have converted are of family.

thanks dick. you are way more tech savvy than myself. i think i'll go pro.
my hands are much too shaky to play the tapes and film on iPhone...
