I think Babers knew there were issues. I think that's why he was so frustrated with the preseason injuries. He talked a lot about the line struggling to get on the same page with Heckel being out for a bit preseason and trying to figure out who the 5 would be, and then we found out that the receivers were limited during the preseason too and that contributed to not building as much chemistry with DeVito as you'd want to see.

If I had to guess, Babers saw this coming but hoped that with game reps things could gel. They tried to find quicker fixes for the line but Alexander and an illfated transition for Servais to tackle were the best they could come up with. They probably hoped Vettorello would develop a little more quickly being force fed snaps.

I don't know. There aren't easy answers. I do agree that the apparent confusion and number of fall start penalties suggests that the problems stem in part from the coaching vs simply being out talented. A guy beats your block because he's better, well, that's the game. A guy gets a free run at your QB because you're not sure where to be, that's something that should be fixed and it sadly looks like we're going backwards on that kind of thing.
