Prior to today'a game, I was walking around the Dome when I ran into Matt Park. Matt says to me: "What was the worst day of your life?" I was tempted to say it was the day I met my ex-husband, but i assumed that was not what Matt had in mind. Then he gestured towards the tall guy standing next to us (who was clearly not my ex-husband). So I said: "Regarding SU basketball?" He nodded affirmatively, so I said "Keith Smart?" He said "no." So I said "Lawrence Moten and the phantom timeout?" And he said,,,, "No, more recent." Then I looked more closely at the guy next to me, and I said: "Him. Tom Brennan."

Yes, it was the UVM coach from 2005 who was at the Dome doing the Westwood One radio broadcast. So i made some feeble remarks about his geeky red-haired center (Copperaith or something) and that despicable little shooting guard (Sonestrand or whatever). Then I offered a weak smile and said, "but we beat you in 2010 in Buffalo -- and you look nothing like my ex-husband."

At that point, he was probably glad he was not my ex-husband -- and he probably had no idea what I was talking about -- but so be it.

He was on Sirius XM about a month ago still talking about how that was the highlight of his coaching career. His signature win. I wanted to puke.

CTO, you have the coolest stories ... I always look forward to your posts that start with, "An interesting thing happened at the game today ..."

Please keep them coming :)

dont forget african dude that killed us

heres an ironic story about that game, i was in florida on spring break...going to a bar to watch that game and of all the places in the world.. there was a table of 5 decked out in vermont gear to watch the game right next to us. so of course i ran my big mouth telling them it was going to be a blow out, over by half time, get back to making syrup, etc...needless to say i was nearly taken out back and tarred and feathered after that loss

there will never ever be a worse SU moment for me than the Vermont loss. The only thing that could top that would be losing to a 16 seed.

I caught a little of the coach's interview on 99.5 and he said that after that unexpected win against SU, many people in Vermont became SU fans, and cheer for them to this day! No, it's not worth it, but still an interesting thing to hear. He said that win was probably the biggest thing that ever happened, or ever will happen, to Vermont basketball.

Like 911 and the Kennedy assassination, I still remember exactly where I was driving while listening to the game on the radio. I'm lucky I didn't have an accident.

I always tell the story of leaving the Worcester arena after that game in complete shock, then getting on the Masspike for the ride home. Stopping for gas at the first gas station and there were other Cuse fans filling up as well. All we could do was just look at each other. No one could say a word. It was extremely surreal.

Very thoughtful of Matt. I understand he hopes to introduce you to Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson in the future, if SU is someday placed in regionals near their prisons.

That would be impressive, even by Joyce standards. Dahmer was killed in prison almost 20 years ago. Although I guess if anyone would get a Dante-esque round trip visit to the Inferno, it'd be Joyce. Think of the stories she could tell of seeing Pol Pot, Nixon, Dahmer, and the like slaving away in their various torments.

I have two things... Although its silly to lump these things together. I'm quite a bit younger than The Kennedy news but: 9-11, VERMONT LOSS, Keith Smart, Bernie Fine Story Breaking, Brushing the snow off Melos car at manley when we got back from Albany.OJ chase & the night we retaliated to al-Qaeda while we were all in Carrier Dome. GMac in the city of lights, Putting my foot through my coffee table during the national champ game, when the refs assisted in KU's comeback, then the realization, we won it all & it was all over. Sadam's statue coming down. Are a few such events for me. like u said events we will not forget where we were.

The other thing I need to say. CTO's stories are wonderful, her insight, the mystique, her friendships with the legends on the hill, her level headed-ness (CTO is this a word) jk. the conversational tone of her stories. Remember she is a professional. I'm sure u could do a top ten of CTO's posts and pin it.

Ok enough gushing over CTO. I Dont think it is a coincidence that my legendary posters are quite honestly legendary outside the message board.

I've never met CTO but I feel I already know her, the story of slip and slide in the bathtub, and many other funny inside stories her philanthropy, the theater etc... Let's just say Jack Welch isn't visiting me in the hospital, just yet. Lets just hope when UConn fades away back to bovine barns and poo. After Calhoun steps down that CTO doesn't disapear. I have it on good authority that she owns undies and socks with husky dogs on them.

Off the top of my head and the most legendary person around here is Orange Eyes he has been in the paper and is in a hall of fame. Not sure he wants everyone knowing who he is so il leave it at that. (Yes he's inducted into a sports hall of fame) If we had a hall of fame built for SU fans, (get it done CTO) Orange Eyes face would be chisled into granite. You are the man!

My favorite BBALL MIND on the board is Mason (TinyManInside). I've learned a lot about basketball from this man. With all that he's provided over the years he'd be on the mount rushmore of cuse fan. He also does really smart stuff in his spare time. Most of all, the biggest thing he taught me is not all scientists are dorks ;-)

There are definitely, some up and comers but nobody else is carve ready yet IMO. Bees and the rest of you that hold this place together thanks for all you do. I'm tired so I'm not gonna find the names of everyone who helps out. You know who u are, special thanks to our New recruiting specialist as well.

Navy and Richmond and URI so much worse.

My happy story for that game goes like this:

I had bought tickets to the BET and was going to go for the first time ever. At the last minute I get told I have to go to Russia for work meetings that start the Monday immediately following the BET weekend. It became impossible to set things up for me to just leave from NYC to Moscow so if I want to make the Monday morning work stuff in Moscow, I have to skip the BET.

So I skip the BET, which we then win, and I promptly get stuck overnight in Paris so I don't make the Monday meetings anyway. Then I have to try to catch snippets of the Thursday NCAA tournament action on the Armed Force Network in my US Government lodging. I missed the Vermont game completely while flying home, but am greeted by my wife at baggage claim to get the words "did you hear what happened?"

So I left the country with Syracuse a common pick for the Final Four and come back 5 days later having missed a BET championship and our season is over. And I've still never been to a BET and the odds don't look good of ever getting to one now.

Geez. I actually got a little teary reading that post. That was truly the pits for you. Sorry!

But you can't keep us fans down for long, because there's always "next year" and hope springs eternal in the hoops fan's beast, I mean, breast.

Even being the first #2 seed to ever lose to a #15 when Richmond beat us? That team even had Billy Owens. (I guess i'm assuming you're of the age to remember that)

Seinfeld was playing at the Landmark the same night as the Vermont game. My wife got me tickets for it about two months earlier, so I decided I'd just DVR the game since it was obvious SU would roll.

As we're waiting in the lobby of the Landmark, having some drinks, everyone's phones (and I mean everyone, like probably 20 just around us in a 2 minute span) start to ring. People start murmuring, and it gets louder, and finally I hear "I don't *cking believe it, SU lost to Vermont" from a guy right next to me. I had turned off my phone purposely so no one could update me on the game, but I'm so glad I heard. I was shocked and angry, and then went in to see Seinfeld and laughed my ass off. Got home that night, deleted the game and never thought about it again. I've never seen highlights or anything, but I did get to see one of the funniest stand up acts in comedy that night.

Still so glad my wife got those tickets, because it allowed me to be happy on a night I would have been devastated. Not to mention it probably saved at least one of our lamps from an untimely death.

Richmond was such a sureal experience, when we were getting to ready to go out into the stadium we see a 45 year old beeming guy putting on the spider outfit, "how does this thing work"... "what I am supposed to do out there?" He blurted out the regular guy couldnt make the trip and he was asked at the last second. I bet that guy reminds everyone about that out every selection sunday.

We were back on a plane and flying home first thing in the morning. At least we had St Patty's day and 44's to cheer us up...

That would be Germain Mopa Njiila. This MF'er averaged about 4 ppg and scored 20 against us which if I remember correctly included a perfect day from the field. This guy was absolutely terrible and picked this game to score a career high against us.

As I predicted the day after he went scoreless against Michigan State and looked terrible. This loss sucked and I would have kicked Brennan in the nuts if I had saw him in our house.

I was SO on board with that team and really believed that was set up for us to get to the Final Four and beat up Izzo along the way. Not sure why, but that one hurt a lot more than Richmond...just personally speaking. I really thought that kind of thing would never happen to us with Gerry Mac around. He and Hakim were just horrible...

Because of the Richmond game, we all had to know that a loss to Vermont was at least possible. It confirmed that you could take nothing for granted when it's one and done. Richmond to me will always be rock bottom, maybe because I was there. We turned it over on the opening jump and it went down hill.

How can anything hurt worse than Keith Smart?

Sorrentine hitting shots from the parking lot.

Mopa-Gila (spelling?) lighting us up

I'm with you here. One shot away from a NC; Vermont's just one of those What games. I never think about Vermont unless someone brings it up. Every NC game I think about Keith Smart and how freaking close...
