My daughter and I had a grand opportunity to watch the Florida Southern game from courtside thanks to the incredible generosity of CTO. It was a great day in many respects. I've been an SU fan since 1973 and have never seen a game that upfront and personal. It's an experience I won't soon forget. There was what I thought was a pretty good crowd and most stayed till close to the end. That was nice to see. We got there early, watched the players shooting & stretching, were able to get autographs from most of the players, and got a wonderful perspective on the speed of the game at the players' level. These guys are really, really, really, really, really good.
Malachi, Tyler, and Franklin don't look much like freshmen. Malachi especially looked motivated and focused but loved watching them all. There are great things to come from that group. Kaleb looked great and think he's comfortable with not having so much pressure on him. He shot well and was fired up when he was in the game. Trevor and silent G will be on the hook to keep the rest of the team calm and played with intensity. Roberson will be a force. Coleman looks good but is still a work in progress. I hope he has a good and healthy year. At times, the team clearly was feeding the ball to him and wanted him to exert himself inside, with mixed success. Folks have said JB was grouchy but I think he just looked tired with more on his mind than the game. All in all, the game gave me optimism that we have the makings of a very good team with the inside game the only real concern. This year will be a challenge for JB but think we'll score points. The young guys play better defense than I expected though physical teams may give us problems, especially inside. Chino's development will be very important to our success.
I was so pleased to share the day with my daughter, a William & Mary alumnus, who worked in Williamsburg till 5 PM on Saturday and works again today at 1 PM. She drove 18 hours over two days to go to a Syracuse basketball exhibition game and was thrilled throughout. She also traveled with me to the UVA football game a few weeks ago. She's becoming a pretty damn good SU fan and she's never lived in CNY. She returned home last nite with a Syracuse basketball signed by I think all of the team. Kudos to you Rachel. Joyce, thanks so much for the superb opportunity. It will be treasured...
Edit: I initially posted this in the game thread but was asked and wanted to post it separately. We voice so many concerns and damnations on this board and think it's at least as important to share the superb things that happen to us as fans. I had something wonderful happen and want to recognize it and the generosity that made it possible. I hope your day was good too.
