ACC basketball = bad

I wouldn't say the ACC is bad. It's early in the year. If anything, this further shows how much the gap between teams from power conferences and mid-majors is shrinking.

Interesting that Indiana State lost to Belmont by 1. Implies that the ND and UNC wins weren't truly "upsets" as the teams are currently configured.

Agree. The gap has been getting smaller and smaller over the past few years.

It's not where you start, it's where you finish. I have a feeling that the ACC teams will be there when all is said and done. The BIG is full of paper tigers.

If the new rule enforcement holds up the gap will become bigger. Only deep teams will survive. Athletic bigs will be rewarded as there will be more scoring opportunities down low. Hand checking was the equalizer.

I don't know, didn't see this in the Big East last season, at least not as often. It may be shrinking but there still is a large gap.

Maryland lost too.

The old ACC is 26-11 (.702) so far, the old Big East is 39-8 (.829).

The cream will rise to the top at the end of the season. Every year some top teams gets beat early and we write them off and then they go on a run. UNC does need Hariston back bad.

True, it takes some teams time to jell and for the coaches to figure out their team as well. Boeheim has always said by the time a kid has played the whole season as a freshmen in the BE and now the ACC he's pretty much a veteran.

Compare the talent gap between top teams in college hoops, to the gap in college football. Upsets can happen in hoops, but the top programs are so far ahead of everyone else in football.

I used to love college football, but I'm rapidly losing interest in it - while my enjoyment of college hoops is growing.

Plus it is quite possible that Belmont may have a heck of a team and be a major player in the field of 68. It may not be so much UNC is bad as much as Belmont may be very good.

Wasn't UNC's high ranking based on Hairston & McDonald, projected starters, playing? If we lost our starting sg and small forward, we'd be struggling big time too. I think the ACC wanted SU and Pitt for more reasons than our football programs. The ACC conference has been top heavy in its major sports for quite a while. Couple that with mid-majors keeping their players for 4 years and it means more upsets. I think it makes JB's consistency even that more amazing.

A lot of young teams nationally in bigger conferences. Future opponent Indiana almost lost to LIU Brooklyn last week at home.

Add to that a lot of low to mid-majors getting better and upsets will happen a lot more in coming years.
