ACC FY24 $$$ Distro

But are NCSU & VPI members of the Association of American Universities (AAU) which the B1G seems to have as a requirement (except Nebraska, after admission to the B1G was booted out of the AAU)?
Unfortunately so was SU.

No, they're not. That may not be a hard and fast requirement in the future because the AAU is placing a lot more emphasis on medical research than in the past. That's why Nebraska was tossed. They don't have a med school in Lincoln; the University system's med school is in Omaha. I believe both VPI and NCSU are very much into bio-medical engineering research, though.

Same as Nebraska, no on-campus med school. I thought I saw something a while ago on one of the boards here that there was talk of SU's trying to acquire Upstate Medical from SUNY.

And you would have to think he will demand excellence and have them focused. Assuming Bill is still focused that is…

He brought in the 9th ranked transfer class with rediculous 41 players. But a lot will depend on what they get out of the qb position. I think the ACC is going to be pretty good this year in general. Lots of solid teams.
Just remember he wasn't good at Cleveland just fair. Went to New England and got Brady.
He is a lot older now and probably not as sharp, with other things that go wrong as you age.

I can wish that too, but Belichek is a great coach. With him in their planning sessions, UNC will have a better gameplan than almost everybody they play.

Even if he isn't the day to day head coach, his ability is going to have a big effect on the program.
He was game planning his last 4 years with the Pats too. That didn't turn out so well. His coaching acumen will help UNC at the margins, but if he doesn't have premium talent on campus then they'll be just another 6 or 7 win program.

It's possible this coming season is a mirage since their schedule is a joke.

One thing to remember that game planning in college is far different than game planning in pros. The style of offense you are trying to contain varies so much week to week and the skill of the players you are trying to coach up does as well.

He might have lost his fastball a bit, but Belichek is still going to be better than most any college coach.

A lot of Patriot fans think he started getting too tricky with drafting, that his coaching wasn't the problem as much as his ability as a GM. But with a big budget and fewer roster limits, he probably has less trouble building a roster at UNC and can still help with coaching better than almost any coach alive.

You have to wonder how it will continue and what effect there will be with all the educational cuts and cuts to medical research.

Just to note, Belichek has a losing record in the NFL when Brady wasn't his qb. And it isn't a small sample size.

The big thing about a lot of bio-medical engineering is the semi-immediate commercial applications and the willingness of companies to pay to get license to use the schools' patents.

They rely on university research so they can reduce the huge research and development costs they would need to spend. It will be interesting to see if they will ramp up directly funding university research in place of the federal government funding cuts or if they increase their own corporate research funding instead.

Yup, but he did have the smarts to draft him and put him in when nobody else saw Brady's greatness...

More importantly, for two decades, Belichek built great defenses out of players nobody else wanted, and his offense found great receivers time and again from guys nobody else wanted.

It's easy to say that Brady made Belichek, and there's an element of truth to that, but look at how many players did nothing, went to the Patriots and became stars, then disappeared after they left. Belichek was masterful at finding roles players who could only do one thing well, and then putting them in a spot to only have to do that one thing.

It is entirely clear to me that Brady is a top 5 QB of all time. But he won at least twice as many super bowls as any of the other QBs in the GOAT conversation... Some of that credit has to go to Belichek.

It's a discussion had many times by Patriot fans, as to who made who between that pair.

Nevertheless, I find it ironic that many Patriot fans think Belichek is the GOAT of NFL coaches, and that his legacy is tarnished by his bad GM skills, yet that's what he decided to do in college.

Why does some of that credit have to go to Belichek? Brady went to Tampa and won there as well. My fact remains, Bill coached for what 7 years without Brady and had a losing record without him starting at qb. For me, that is a telling stat. And I am not so sure that Bill deserves the credit for selecting Brady.

Initially, Brady got in because Bledsoe got hurt.

Joe Montana isn't in your GOAT conversation?

Joe Montana isn't in your GOAT conversation?
Not really... He was an artifact of Bill Walsh revolutionizing offense in football. As good as Montana was, after he left, Steve Young did exactly the same thing... Then the rest of football caught up. Similar to Aikman and Bradshaw, Montana was a good quarterback that was a product of a very good team and offensive system, but not great in his own right. Montana was probably the third best skill position player on his own offense.

Not that this has anything to do with the original topic. :)

Loaded subject with lots of facets, but what I hear is that while the Tech Transfer offices may get more aggressive selling IP that has commercial viability, and through their own investment in translational research they may be able to steer the research to be more commercially focused, most schools will NOT dip into their endowment to fund research. What’s worse is the tax on endowment earnings is likely to increase, so operating budgets, which are almost entirely funded by endowment interest earnings will get even smaller.

Bill is a hell of a coach. Best defensive mind in football. Problem is he got arrogant and was a terrible Executive.

Got too cute drafting and tried to prove people he could do things his way even when people said it was dumb. Like hiring Patricia as his offensive coordinator and judge as his QB coach. A defensive coordinator and a special teams coach. But no, Bill is smarter than everyone else and he wanted to prove to everyone that he knows more than them.

Same thing happened in the drafts when he continually reached for lesser known guys because he knew better then everyone else.

UNC and UVA will go Big 10 if they leave the SeC, imo. Academics matter and the Big 10 is vastly superior academically to the SEC while comparable athletically.

By the way this is EXACTLY what I am watching too. I think companies, in particular pharma, with its severely reduced R&D capacity since about 2000, coinciding with an increase in federal funding of research at the university level, will HAVE TO reinvest in R&D either in-house or in the form of earlier investment, but for right now, they are buying IP for pennies on the dollar and haven't really engaged in genuine investment yet.
