IMO it would be nice for there to be 5 conferences of 18 teams consisting of 3 divisions. Then they break away from the leftovers. Having 90 teams in the top flight is plenty and it forces better OOC matchups since there are fewer cupcakes. Having 3 divisions also keeps more fans interested. There are fewer teams to hurdle to win a division. So something like the below. The only FBS state that gets left out is Hawaii so there shouldn't be political pushback. Playoffs are the 5 conference champs plus 2 at larges. That way the season has meaning and everyone has a shot. Keep the Bowls as they are like the NIT anyway at this point. B1G East- Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Maryland, Rutgers, Indiana North- Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Illinois West- Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa State, Colorado, Kansas, Rice This would help build Nebraska back up. Between the easier division and playing games in Texas again for recruiting. Their brand is needed. It would also help build Michigan back up as it is easier to win the division without Ohio and Penn State. B1G adds a Texas school and 4 AAU schools. SEC East- Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vanderbilt South- Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State West- Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Kansas State We get the original SEC East and West. Then 6 of the old B12. ACC North- Notre Dame, Miami, Cincinatti, Pitt, Syracuse, BC South- Clemson, FSU, Georgia Tech, UNC, UVA, Duke Central- Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Louisville, UCF, NC State, Wake Forrest Everyone gets to play a Florida school so they can be happy. P12 North- Oregon, Washington, Boise State, Washington State, Oregon State, UNLV West- USC, UCLA, San Diego State, Stanford, Cal, Fresno State South- Utah, Houston, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Arizona, New Mexico With a division of California teams the other divisions are guaranteed a game in the state every year. B12 East- Army, Navy, East Carolina, USF, Temple, UConn South- Baylor, TCU, SMU, Memphis, Tulsa, Tulane West- BYU, Colorado State, Air Force, Nevada, San Jose State, Wyoming UConn isn't worthy but do you leave the state of Connecticut out? Same thing with Wyoming. These 18 schools you can argue should be left behind but it is nice to have some cupcakes. Just not 60 of them like we do now.
