I am not sure where you get ISU is a  clear #2 school, it is not. Years ago that may be true, when I moved to Iowa in 1992 Hawkeyes were indeed king. It has changed drastically, especially in the last 10 years as ISU put more priority into hiring for their sports teams. The engineering and vet programs have flourished while the Hawkeyes claim the medical hospital. Ames has continued to grow, while Iowa City remains stagnant, although the hospital continues to grow. The Des Moines are in general continues to grow, and as ISU teams continue to succeed, their fan base has expanded over the years. The Kansas City region has become a second home to ISU in very similar fashion that NYC historically has been to SU. Also, OK St is no where considered to be a rival anymore, although both Kansas teams still get their fair of hype but no where near what it used to be. The clear top 4 in the Big 12 are Kansas, Houston, Iowa State, and Arizona when you combine both basketball and football. After them I would put BYU and Baylor. Then both Texas schools then the rest. It is a fun conference to watch and has become extremely competitive over the last decade. Bottom line is don't take what used to be and believe it still to be true today.
