I'm not so sure it will ever get to the point that the SEC and B1G take it all to themselves and exclude everyone else. Some may already realize that plan may not be good for college football overall. If they eliminate a large segment of the country from caring about the CFB playoffs, interest and viewership may go down, not just for the playoffs but throughout the whole season. A case in point -- just a few months ago the SEC and B1G where united and hellbent on imposing a 16 team playoff system in 2026 with each league getting 4 automatic qualifers and the ACC and B12 each getting 2. But a funny thing happened. The SEC coaches decided they didn't like that and didn't want it. They wanted to "earn" their at-large bids. It wasn't clear why they did but I did see some suggestions that they didn't think it was good for CFB overall. It was suprising and the SEC leadership went a long with it. Now there is an impass between the SEC and B1G on the 16 team format. Consequently the 12 team playoffs may continue past this year with the current 5+1+6 format. And the major reason the B1G wants the 4+4+2+2+4 format is because the new B1G Commissioner promised their TV partners that they'd turn their "championship" game slots into play-in games for their 3rd and 4th automatic slot. Maybe some day they'll realize fans wouldn't be interested to watch "play-in" games. So the lesson is -- we have no idea what's going to happen with the SEC and B1G in the future so I don't assume they will decide to hog it all to themselves.
