ACC Stadium Rankings

The only one I've been to is UNC. Nice enough stadium. I guess if being able to look at trees while at a football game is important to you, you could put it ahead of the Carrier Dome. For me, and most football fans I assume, I make a note of the nice looking trees for about 10 seconds, and after that I don't care about them anymore. But that's me. Maybe some can look at trees for hours.

If you want some noise and care about actually watching the football game...I'd go Dome every time. Can't really go wrong with the Dome in that regard, which I always assumed was the biggest attraction of a football stadium...being able to actually watch and enjoy the game.

Atmosphere over nature.

Though I could see the appeal of a looming skyline.

Agreed. Not that UNC was a bad experience for watching the game. It was actually pretty good in terms of sightlines and you also felt close to the field. But I'd say the Dome is really hard to beat in both of those areas.

I haven't been, but if the viewing experience on television is any indication, Louisville is too high.

Dome seems about right, considering the amenities and the past decade.

Bobby Dod's overrated

I thought it was neat for a smaller venue, the concourses are horrid though. My experience was likely better because it was watching UGA beat Tech in an OT thriller vs Tech stomping Cuse this past season.

Really surprised to see NC State so high. Their fans were really quiet, the stadium is undistinguished and its location, near a fairgrounds, office park and Erie Blvd like sprawl, is unfortunate. Tailgating was average. Nothing special about it. It definitely belongs in the bottom tier.

Virginia has a nicer environment. It is located in the middle of their beautiful campus and the stadium was designed to fit in with the Georgian architecture surrounding it.

Again the fans were quiet and laid back, almost Stepford-like.

I would put both behind the Dome. Shocked UL is so high. Why? But I haven't visited there, so I won't protest loudly.

I've heard great things about Papa Johns, especially with the recent success. Heard it's loud and a good game day experience.

NC State is high because they usually get a legit 50k in their stadium and if they are decent its a tougher place to play we played them when they sucked and we didn't move the needle. I agree UVA is underrated and I like their gameday traditions of male students in shirts and ties and females in dresses if they were better I would move them up to around 5 and I agree going to PJS Louisville is too high it is a good venue but not better than UNC, UVA or NC State.

I think this is very much a reflection of where you are from and what sort of personality you have. I like to use boston as an example - some people genuinely hate fenway park even if they are not red sox haters. some of those same folks far prefer a Gillette stadium type environment with good parking, modern amenities, out of town location, and totally generic. People on the other side of the fenway argument are not going to be impressed by Gillette.

I have been to every ACC school stadium except Florida State which I will next time SU plays if its not a bad time. Living in Charlotte makes the 4 NC schools, and Clemson easy. Even though I hate VPI that stadium and Clemson are clearly the toughest venues and FSU's talent is why I would put them 3rd. NC State, North Carolina, Virginia are all great venues if they were consistently good even tougher. UVA-UNC are the blueblood spots more tradition while NC State and Virginia Tech are the blue collar brothers with more potentially loud crowds.
If Miami was still at the Orange Bowl they would be more in the middle playing at the Dolphins stadium kills atmosphere because its too big.

Very cool. Which stadiums had the rudest and nicest fans?

I've been to seven of them, all for FSU games, so I got them at their best atmosphere. I love FSU's stadium, but I have no problem with Clemson being first, that's an awesome place.

I've got no big problem with this list actually. I've got no opinion on Louisville, so I don't know if that's legit.

I like Bobby Dodd more than most. What hurts it is atmosphere. But the fact that it's the oldest D1 field means a lot to me. And a night game, surrounded by the buildings of Atlanta, is a really cool setting.

I think that Carter Finley should be as high as it is. Agree that the setting is nothing special, but that place really rocks out more than people realize if they've got anything going. Great atmosphere for a Thursday night game. The NC State fans can be much more engaged and loud than is typical of the ACC.

I see Keenan rated highly a lot...I agree with the others that it was nothing special to me. I did not care for the atmosphere at all, too antiseptic and UNC fans were as wine and cheese as their reputation. The stadium was just ok, and really was lacking in the scoreboard department at the time I visited years ago. Although FSU and Peter Warrick gave their high school level scoreboard quite a workout in the first quarter.

Wake is what it is. Just an ok little stadium which is an easy place to get in and out of and see a game. It's ranked right.

Syracuse I haven't been there for a football game since 89. I can't say I am a "fan" of the Carrier Dome, but I respect it. If it is full and rocking like it has been at times in the past, I think it could be up to five or six (excluding Louisville). I'd put it right there with Bobby Dodd. If the Dome is at it's best, the loud and unique atmosphere probably gives it the nod over Bobby Dodd. If it's a ho hum crowd of some recent years, I'd give the nod to Bobby Dodd for it's history and setting, and being outside.

If you ever were at a game in late November, before the Carrier Dome, you would truly appreciate the dome a great deal more. Weather could make it an absolutely miserable experience.

Thank you for the compliments. Very small quibble - it's neo-classical architecture. UMd has Georgian. ;)

I stand corrected and am truly sorry to do anything to imply that UVa is anything like UMd!

I will note though that Duke thinks the UVa campus design is Georgian. I can see now why Duke is always at the center of controversy in the ACC...

I'll just interject that the Dome is perhaps the biggest chameleon in the ACC.

Full and loud supporting a good team and it's a great venue.

Empty and quiet with a bad-to-mediocre team on the field, and it's a concrete mausoleum.

Noticed the guy from Syracuse.com put the Dome at 12, ahead of only Pitt and Wake.

Typical.
