OK, what's the deal here? Seems that most posters with an opinion would like to see him retained by the new coach due to his recruiting connections. But there have also some posts critical of his abilities as a coach of wide receivers, especially as the season got ugly.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is he a good coach? Would love to hear from money or Finwad or anyone else with some real technical expertise.

To the layperson, it seems that our receivers are more naturally talented yet obviously less successful than the kids who played for Rob Moore, but of course coaching is only one factor.

This is what I'll say about Coach Acosta and our WR production from a 10,000 ft. view.

Philosophically - Bobby is a fantastic communicator who develops great bonds with his personnel. He is an experienced coach, and being a position coach is something that he can more than handle.

On the field - he's a technician, very close attention to detail. Focuses on the little things. Has no problem teaching technique, and, knows technique.

Why didn't this translate to production?

Largely as a bi-product of our offense. I hate hearing things like, our WR's can't get open, we suck against man coverage, no separation, bla, bla, bla. It's all BS.

Our WR's ran crisp routes and created separation. Our QB play was horrendous. Nothing against Zack Mahoney, but, he's simply not accurate. Furthermore, even when Dungey was in, he was still a true FR adjusting to the speed of the game and a new offense. It's why we used so much option in the latter part of the year. We weren't consistent enough through the air, or with our Inside Zone, to continue to move the chains. Furthermore, because we became less dynamic, we became easier to defend. There are many reasons that ultimately culminated with low production.

This is just scratching the surface of everything. It can be described in much greater detail, but, it's not really necessary.

IMO Coach Acosta is a talented and really over qualified Position Coach.

I think Acosta forms bonds with players that goes unmatched. They seem amazingly comfortable with him, like he is their blood. That is huge with recruiting and for off the field stuff. Having said that, i can't see Coyle keeping anyone and will probably clean house. Daoust would be another guy i would like to see retained if possible.

Just what I was looking for - thanks, guys.

And the blocking did stand out this season; night-and-day difference from recent years.

Acosta and Daoust are both absolutely worthy of being retained regardless of who is hired. I would keep Daoust as the DC and Acosta is worth his weight in gold for his NJ connections. I'd really hate to see a completely brand new staff because there were/are very good coaches on this team.

the second the passing game struggles, you start hearing bleating about PRESS COVERAGE! i love it

I agree that the blocking this year has been excellent (especially Ishmael), but the lack of production from the position (outside of Ish) is glaring. The Custis/Enoicy enigma is a head scratcher. After Ish/Estime, there has been an absolute void in production (and truth be told, Brisley is really only valuable on the occasional long ball...his production on short and intermediate routes is not impressive), and I find it very hard to believe those two couldn;t be molded into even average receivers, given their physical tools.

By all accounts, he is a great recruiter for us tho, so if we land someone like Frost or BB (who have no recruiting ties to the area), he would certainly be worth trying to retain.

I agree that our wide outs haven't performed asa unit but i truly believe ish will be a pro. He lost some speed this year after adding 20# in the off season, he and brisly and even lewis have worked themselves open all year, ED most of the time found them but Mahoney did not. Bris was open on the post deep 3x against ncst but the ball never found him, at this point i think enoicy and custis dont have the heart and/or smarts. They have the physical measurables but lack the motor, that's the only explanation at this point to not break the lineup.

I am no expert analyst and even I noticed the improved blocking by our WRs. Forgot all about it until now. Don't know about the rest but that was a bright point this season.

Nothing against Zack Mahoney, but, he's simply not accurate.

Even Zack has openly said he missed his throws. Its no secret that without an accurate QB you can't throw downfield. I'm sure Zack would not be offended by this accurate observation.

I will say, however, that I have seen the WR's botch some blocks that, if they had held, would have benefited us. Not a knock on Acosta, just sometimes the position the WR's take to hold a block doesn't allow for more than a cursory impedance to tackling our poor ball carrier.

Opportunities were there against NC State for throws down the field. Zach just isn't there yet.

As frustrating as this season has been, there were definitely glimpses of team play that gave me pride to call myself an Orangemen fan.
