This year I will be again charting how teams have done “against ranked teams”, which is something that always comes up at the end of the year when the arguments over who should be in the NCAA tournament start. As usual, this is not meant to end those arguments, just to give those making them something to look at in forming their opinions. This is just one thing to look at. But I think it’s a big thing. I will again be using my “new procedure” this year. The old procedure was that I would first grant teams playing ranked teams a certain number of points based on who they are playing. If you played the #1 team, (I use the AP- writer’s poll for continuity), you get 25 points. If you are playing the #2 team, you get 24 points, etc. down to getting 1 point for playing the #25 team. I call these “schedule points”. Here’s a chart to make it simple: 1-25, 2-24, 3-23, 4-22, 5-21, 6-20, 7-19, 8-18, 9-17, 10-16, 11-15, 12-14, 13-13, 14-12, 15-11, 16-10, 17-9, 18-8, 19-7, 20-6, 21-5, 22-4, 23-3, 24-2, 25-1. (Of course you can always just subtract the ranking from 26. That will work every time.) Then I look at the point differential in the actual game. If you defeated the ranked team, you add the number of points you won by to the schedule points. If you lost to that team, you subtract the margin you lost by from the schedule points. (I call these ‘game’ points.) The difference is that formerly I didn’t count any deficit: if you got to zero, you got zero. This year I’m going to record negative points, too, so a team can get full ‘credit’ for a really bad performance. WEEK 3 Georgetown beat #22 Texas 82-66 = +20 points Akron lost to #2 Louisville 76-82 = +18 points Baylor beat #17 Villanova 87-78 = +18 points Georgetown lost to #1 Duke 73-81 = +17 points Arizona State lost to #7 Virginia 45-48 = +16 points Florida beat #18 Xavier 70-65 = +13 points Vermont lost to #7 Virginia 55-61 = +13 points UT Arlington lost to #8 Gonzaga 66-72 = +12 points East Tennessee State lost to #4 Kansas 63-75 = +10 points Louisiana State lost to #15 Utah State 78-80 = +9 points Mississippi lost to #16 Memphis 86-87 = +9 points Utah Valley lost to #9 Kentucky 74-82 = +9 points Connecticut lost to #18 Xavier 74-75 = +7 points Elon lost to #5 North Carolina 61-75 = +7 points South Dakota State lost to #14 Arizona 64-71 = +5 points Houston lost to #11 Oregon 66-78 = +3 points Mississippi State lost to #17 Villanova 76-83 = +2 points North Texas State lost to #15 Utah State 59-68 = +2 points Fairfield lost to #6 Maryland 55-74 = +1 point Little Rock lost to #16 Memphis 58-68 = 0 points Tennessee State lost to #12 Texas Tech 57-72 = -1 point South Carolina Upstate lost to #2 Louisville 50-76 = -2 points George Mason lost to #6 Maryland 63-86 = -3 points Mount St. Mary’s lost to #9 Kentucky 62-82 = -3 points Villanova lost to #24 Baylor 78-87 = -7 points Lamar lost to #9 Kentucky 56-81 = -8 points California lost to #1 Duke 52-87 = -10 points Cal State Bakersfield lost to #8 Gonzaga 49-77 = -10 points Coastal Carolina lost to #24 Baylor 65-77 = -10 points Wyoming lost to #23 Colorado 41-56 = -12 points California lost to #22 Texas 45-62 = -13 points Cal –Irvine lost to #23 Colorado 53-69 = -13 points Towson lost to #18 Xavier 51-73 = -14 points Brooklyn lost to #12 Texas Tech 66-96 = -16 points Montana lost to #25 Washington 56-73 = -16 points Maine lost to #25 Washington 53-72 = -18 points San Diego lost to #25 Washington 69-88 = -18 points Stetson lost to #10 Ohio State 51-86 = -19 points Middle Tennessee State lost to #17 Villanova = -20 points Ohio University lost to #24 Baylor 53-76 = -21 points Texas-San Antonio lost to #15 Utah State 50-82 = -21 points Colgate lost to #19 Auburn 62-91 = -22 points Florida A&M lost to #13 Seton Hall 51-87 = -23 points Purdue-Fort Wayne lost to #10 Ohio State 46-85 = -23 points Charleston Southern lost to Michigan State 46-94 = -25 points Florida Gulf Coast lost to #21 Va Commonwealth 48-78 = -25 points Long Beach State lost to #14 Arizona 67-104 = -25 points Alabama State lost to #20 Tennessee 41-76 = -29 points Need San Diego vs. Washington Comment: This time of year the big fish are treating to eat the little fish, (and occasionally gagging on them). A lot of schools that won’t be on this list in January are piling up the points, (some positive, mostly negative). Mike Hopkins team batted three of them out of the park. Top 25 Ohio State +41 points Georgetown +37 points Michigan State +34 points Florida State +32 points Kentucky +32 points Evansville +28 points Duke +25 points Connecticut +21 points Oregon +21 points Kansas +20 points Tennessee +19 points Akron +18 points Baylor +18 points Arizona State +16 points Florida +13 points Georgia State +13 points Vermont +13 points Washington +13 points Winthrop +12 points East Tennessee State +10 points Louisiana State +9 points Mississippi +9 points Utah Valley +9 points Elon +7 points U of Miami +7 points Texas +7 points Syracuse has +1 point SU’s opponents: Virginia 0 Colgate -22 Seattle 0 Cornell 0 Bucknell 0 Oklahoma State 0 Mississippi 0 Penn State 0 Iowa 0 Georgia Tech 0 Georgetown +37 Oakland -11 North Florida +5 Niagara 0 Notre Dame +6 Virginia Tech 0 Virginia 0 Boston College 0 Virginia Tech 0 Notre Dame +6 Pittsburgh 0 Clemson 0 Duke +25 Wake Forest 0 North Carolina State 0 Florida State +32 Louisville 0 Georgia Tech 0 Pittsburgh 0 North Carolina 0 Boston College 0 U of Miami +7 The worst so far is Central Arkansas with -61 points
