The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc., down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc.). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking.

A lot of teams were eatin’ hardy this week, off of their opponent’s rankings, (but not Maryland-Eastern Shore). Connecticut is obviously not on the level of their two national championship teams of the last two years, (not yet, anyway), but teams got fat beating them with their #2 ranking, except the dreadful Maryland-Eastern Shore. Overall, the Top 25 suffered 22 upsets.

The worst in a game is Maryland Eastern Shore who lost to #19 Arkansas 35-109 = -67. The Hawks have has the worst cumulative total at -143. They were once Maryland State and had a respectable history in athletics as an historically black college. The name was changed to Maryland Eastern Shore in 1970. They were an NAIA basketball power in the early 1970’s, going to the NAIA finals in 1969 and 1973 and even to the NIT in 1974 where they won a game before going out in the quarterfinals. There were the first historically black school to play in that tournament. That team was 27-2. It finished #20 in the AP poll. The next year they were 2-24. Since then, they clung to Division 1 status despite three winning seasons. They make their money by playing, (this season, as an example): Vanderbilt, who beat them by 39 points, Illinois, (-47 points), Arkansas (-74 points) and Connecticut (-54 points), for the $$$$$.

Syracuse has yet to play a ranked team. (Texas Tech was actually rated #24 in the coach’s poll when we played them. ESPN only lists the writer’s poll rankings in their schedules or with their scores.)
