The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc., down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc.). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking. Week 4 Dayton beat #2 Connecticut 85-67 = +42 points Louisville beat #14 Indiana 89-61 = +40 West Virginia beat #3 Gonzaga 86-79 = +30 Michigan beat #22 Xavier 78-53 = +29 Gonzaga beat #14 Indiana 89-73 = +28 Memphis beat #2 Connecticut 99-97 = +28 Auburn beat #12 North Carolina 85-72 = +27 Alabama beat #6 Houston 85-80 = +25 Colorado beat #2 Connecticut 73-72 = +25 Auburn beat #5 Iowa State 83-81 = +23 San Diego State beat #21 Creighton 71-53 = +23 San Diego State beat #6 Houston 73-70 = +23 Duke lost to #1 Kansas 72-75 = +22 Illinois beat #19 Arkansas 77-90 = +20 Iowa State lost to #4 Auburn 81-83 = +20 Oregon beat #9 Alabama 83-81 = +19 Kansas beat #11 Duke 75-72 = +18 Michigan State beat #12 North Carolina 94-91 = +17 Dayton lost to #5 Iowa State 84-89 = +16 Oregon beat #20 Texas A&M 80-70 = +16 Dayton lost to #12 North Carolina 90-92 = +12 Houston lost to #9 Alabama 80-85 = +12 Rutgers lost to #9 Alabama 90-95 = +12 Butler beat #25 Mississippi 87-77 = +11 Mississippi lost #13 Purdue 78-80 = +11 North Carolina lost to #4 Auburn 72-85 = +9 Notre Dame lost to #6 Houston 54-65 = +9 Texas A&M beat #21 Creighton 77-73 = +9 West Virginia beat #24 Arizona 83-76 = +9 Memphis lost to #4 Auburn 76-90 = +8 Indiana lost to #3 Gonzaga 73-89 = +7 Oklahoma beat #24 Arizona 82-77 = +7 Purdue beat #23 Mississippi 80-78 = +5 North Carolina State lost to #13 Purdue 61-71 = +3 Rutgers lost to #20 Texas A&M 77-81 = +2 Texas A&M lost to #21 Creighton 73-77 = +2 Notre Dame lost to #21 Creighton 76-80 = +1 South Carolina State lost to #22 Xavier 68-71 = +1 Western Kentucky lost to #8 Kentucky 68-87 = -1 Davidson lost to #3 Gonzaga 65-90 = -2 Providence lost to #14 Indiana 73-89 = -4 South Carolina lost to #22 Xavier 66-75 = -5 Colorado lost to #5 Iowa State 71-99 = -7 Seattle lost to #11 Duke 48-70 = -7 Alabama lost to #16 Cincinnati 59-77 = -8 Brigham Young lost to #23 Mississippi 85-96 = -8 Wake Forest lost to #18 Florida 58-75 = -9 Chicago lost to #15 Wisconsin 53-74 = -10 Furman lost to #1 Kansas 51-86 = -10 Georgia State lost to #8 Kentucky 76-105 = -11 Western Carolina lost to #10 Marquette 62-94 = -16 Stonehill lost to #10 Marquette 59-94 = -19 UNLV lost to #25 Mississippi State 58-80 = -21 New Orlean lost to #17 Baylor 60-91 = -22 UT Martin lost to #7 Tennessee 35-78 = -24 Wichita State lost to #18 Florida 51-88 = -29 Maryland-Eastern Shore lost to #2 Connecticut 45-99 = -30 Davidson lost to #24 Arizona 71-104 = -31 Maryland Eastern Shore lost to #19 Arkansas 35-109 = -67 A lot of teams were eatin’ hardy this week, off of their opponent’s rankings, (but not Maryland-Eastern Shore). Connecticut is obviously not on the level of their two national championship teams of the last two years, (not yet, anyway), but teams got fat beating them with their #2 ranking, except the dreadful Maryland-Eastern Shore. Overall, the Top 25 suffered 22 upsets. WEEKLY LEADERS Week 1: Gonzaga beat #8 Baylor 101-63 = +56 points Week 2: Purdue beat #2 Alabama 87-78 = +33 Week 3: Marquette beat #6 Purdue 76-58 = +38 Week 4: Dayton beat #2 Connecticut 85-67 = +42 points TOP TEN PERFORMANCES Week 1: Gonzaga beat #8 Baylor 101-63 = +56 points Week 4: Dayton beat #2 Connecticut 85-67 = +42 Week 4: Louisville beat #14 Indiana 89-61 = +40 Week 3: Marquette beat #6 Purdue 76-58 = +38 Week 2: Purdue beat #2 Alabama 87-78 = +33 Week 2: Wisconsin beat #9 Arizona 103-88 = +32 Week 4: West Virginia beat #3 Gonzaga 86-79 = +30 Week 4: Michigan beat #22 Xavier 78-53 = +29 Week 3: Tennessee lost to #13 Baylor 77-62 = +28 Week 4: Gonzaga beat #14 Indiana 89-73 = +28 Week 4: Memphis beat #2 Connecticut 99-97 = +28 TOP 25 CUMULATIVE Gonzaga +84 points Dayton +70 San Diego State +56 Auburn +50 Duke +47 West Virginia +39 Kansas +38 Marquette +38 Memphis +36 Alabama +35 Oregon +35 Michigan State +34 Louisville +32 Wisconsin +32 North Carolina +31 Purdue +31 Texas A&M +30 Michigan +29 Tennessee +28 Illinois +25 Kentucky +25 Nebraska +23 Houston +22 Iowa State +20 Colorado +18 The worst in a game is Maryland Eastern Shore who lost to #19 Arkansas 35-109 = -67. The Hawks have has the worst cumulative total at -143. They were once Maryland State and had a respectable history in athletics as an historically black college. The name was changed to Maryland Eastern Shore in 1970. They were an NAIA basketball power in the early 1970’s, going to the NAIA finals in 1969 and 1973 and even to the NIT in 1974 where they won a game before going out in the quarterfinals. There were the first historically black school to play in that tournament. That team was 27-2. It finished #20 in the AP poll. The next year they were 2-24. Since then, they clung to Division 1 status despite three winning seasons. They make their money by playing, (this season, as an example): Vanderbilt, who beat them by 39 points, Illinois, (-47 points), Arkansas (-74 points) and Connecticut (-54 points), for the $$$$$. Syracuse has yet to play a ranked team. (Texas Tech was actually rated #24 in the coach’s poll when we played them. ESPN only lists the writer’s poll rankings in their schedules or with their scores.) Here are their opponents: Le Moyne -18 Colgate Youngstown State -29 Texas Saint Joseph’s Texas Tech Cornell Tennessee +28 Notre Dame +10 Albany Georgetown Maryland +7 Bucknell Wake Forest -9 Florida State -7 Georgia Tech -15 Boston College Louisville -8 Notre Dame Clemson Pittsburgh +1 Stanford California Duke +47 U of Miami North Carolina +31 North Carolina State +3 Virginia Tech Southern Methodist Virginia -28
