[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 2462745, member: 289"] This year I will be again charting how teams have done “against ranked teams”, which is something that always comes up at the end of the year when the arguments over who should be in the NCAA tournament start. As usual, this is not meant to end those arguments, just to give those making them something to look at in forming their opinions. This is just one thing to look at. But I think it’s a big thing. I’m going to do it a bit differently this year. The old procedure was that I would first grant teams playing ranked teams a certain number of points based on who they are playing. If you played the #1 team, (I use the AP- writer’s poll for continuity), you get 25 points. If you are playing the #2 team, you get 24 points, etc. down to getting 1 point for playing the #25 team. I call these “schedule points”. Here’s a chart to make it simple: 1-25, 2-24, 3-23, 4-22, 5-21, 6-20, 7-19, 8-18, 9-17, 10-16, 11-15, 12-14, 13-13, 14-12, 15-11, 16-10, 17-9, 18-8, 19-7, 20-6, 21-5, 22-4, 23-3, 24-2, 25-1. (Of course you can always just subtract the ranking from 26. That will work every time.) Then I look at the point differential in the actual game. If you defeated the ranked team, you add the number of points you won by to the schedule points. If you lost to that team, you subtract the margin you lost by from the schedule points. (I call these ‘game’ points.) The difference between this year and last year if that I didn’t count any deficit: if you got to zero, you got zero. This year I’m going to try to record negative points, too, so a team can get full ‘credit’ for a really bad performance. WEEK 11 Kansas State beat #4 Oklahoma 87-69 = +40 points Iowa State beat #8 Texas Tech 70-52 = +36 points Houston beat #7 Wichita State 73-59 = +33 points Texas beat #8 Texas Tech 67-58 = +27 points Kansas beat #6 West Virginia 71-66 = +25 points Creighton beat #19 Seton Hall 80-63 = +24 points Southern Methodist beat #7 Wichita State 83-78 = +24 points Nebraska beat #23 Michigan 72-52 = +25 points Oklahoma State beat #4 Oklahoma 83-81 = +20 points Stanford beat #16 Arizona State 86-77 = +19 points South Carolina beat #18 Kentucky 76-68 = +16 points St. Mary’s beat #13 Gonzaga 74-71 = +16 points Xavier beat #19 Seton Hall 73-64 = +16 points Alabama beat #17 Auburn 76-71 = +14 points North Carolina beat #20 Clemson 87-79 = +14 points Wake Forest lost to #2 Virginia 49-59 = +14 points Baylor lost to #10 Kansas 67-70 = +13 points U of Miami lost to #5 Duke 75-83 = +13 points Stanford lost to #14 Arizona 71-73 = +10 points West Virginia lost to #10 Kansas 66-71 = +10 points Duke beat #25 U of Miami 83-75 = +9 points Missouri beat #21 Tennessee 59-55 = +9 points Georgia Tech lost to #2 Virginia 48-64 = +8 points St. John’s lost to #11 Xavier 82-88 = +8 points Kansas State beat #24 Texas Christian 73-68 = +7 points Florida beat #18 Kentucky 64-66 = +6 points Seton Hall lost to #11 Xavier 64-73 = +6 points Connecticut lost to #1 Villanova 61-81 = +5 points Central Florida lost to #12 Cincinnati 38-49 = +3 points Clemson lost to #15 North Carolina 79-87 = +3 points California lost to #16 Arizona State 73-81 = +2 points Maryland lost to #23 Michigan 67-68 = +2 points Iowa lost to #3 Purdue 64-87 = 0 points Indiana lost to #9 Michigan State 57-85 = -1 points Northwestern lost to #22 Ohio State 65-71 = -2 points Santa Clara lost to #13 Gonzaga 60-75 = -2 points South Carolina lost to #21 Tennessee 63-70 = -2 points Georgia Tech lost to #15 North Carolina 66-80 = -3 points Notre Dame lost to #20 Clemson 58-67 = -3 points North Carolina State lost to #25 U of Miami 81-86 = -4 points Georgia lost to #17 Auburn 65-79 = -5 points Wisconsin lost to #3 Purdue 50-78 = -5 points Pittsburgh lost to #5 Duke 54-81 = -6 points Georgetown lost to #1 Villanova 56-88 = -7 points East Carolina lost to #12 Cincinnati 60-86 = -10 points Rutgers lost to #23 Michigan 47-62 = -12 points Minnesota lost to #22 Ohio State 49-67 = -14 points Texas lost to #6 West Virginia 51-86 = -15 points California lost to #24 Arizona 58-79 = -19 points Iowa State lost to #24 Texas Christian 73-96 = -21 points Comments: Two very good teams, Texas Tech and Wichita State, had bad weeks. It happens. A third, Oklahoma seems too dependent on one guy. Trae Young is quite a guy but against Oklahoma State he was 14 for 39 from the field. That’s 36%. Of course teammates were 14 for 43, so maybe they are better off with Trae hoisting it. He had 48 points and somehow managed 8 assists to his nearsighted teammates. Top 25 Texas Tech +142 points Oklahoma +101 points Michigan State +92 points Xavier +91 points Florida +90 points North Carolina State +75 points Florida State +73 points Duke +71 points Villanova +70 points Purdue +67 points Southern Methodist +65 points Alabama +64 points Arizona State +64 points Texas A&M +63 points Marquette +62 points Kansas +58 points West Virginia +55 points Nebraska +54 points Texas +54 points Tennessee +48 points Iowa State +45 points Texas Christian +45 points Oklahoma State +41 points Kansas State +40 points U of Miami +38 points Syracuse has+16 points from the losses to Kansas, Virginia and Florida State The worst team so far is Savannah State with -151 points.
