[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 4140419, member: 289"] The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc, down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking. I didn’t do that for this year’s football season because with some conferences opting out and then opting back in later in the seasons, the rankings were a mess. But everybody is playing basketball now, or trying to, so I’ve decided to keep track of performances against ranked teams in this sport. I’ve decided to add an extra wrinkle: I will keep track of the performances of the ranked teams themselves by totaling the points earned against them, with the +/- reversed. This will measure their performance “as a ranked team” We’ll see how that goes and I’ll decide whether to continue with that. When ranked teams play each other, their only points will be under the first test. Otherwise the Duke-Kentucky game would look like this: Duke beat #10 Kentucky 79-71: Duke +24 Kentucky -24 Kentucky lost to #9 Duke 71-79: Kentucky +9 Duke -9 That would give Duke +15 points and Kentucky -15 points. They should both get credit for playing each other in a competitive game. Giving Duke +24 points and Kentucky +9 makes more sense.) WEEK 11 (1/17-23/22) Tennessee beat #13 Louisiana State 64-50 Tennessee +27 both ranked Texas Christian beat #15 Iowa State 59-44 Texas Christian +26 Iowa State -26 Indiana beat #4 Purdue 68-65 Indiana +25 Purdue -25 Maryland beat #17 Illinois 81-65 Maryland +25 Illinois -25 Auburn beat #12 Kentucky 80-71 Auburn +23 both ranked Texas Tech beat #15 Iowa State 72-60 Texas Tech +23 both ranked Florida State lost to #6 Duke 79-78 Florida State +21 Duke -21 Marquette beat #11 Villanova 57-54 Marquette +18 Villanova -18 Marquette beat #20 Xavier 75-64 Marquette +17 Xavier -17 Purdue beat #17 Illinois 96-88 Purdue +17 both ranked Alabama beat #13 Louisiana State 70-67 Alabama +16 Louisiana State -16 Kansas State lost to #7 Kansas 75-78 Kansas State +16 Kansas -16 Oklahoma lost to #7 Kansas 64-67 Oklahoma +16 Kansas -16 Kentucky lost to #2 Auburn 71-80 Kentucky +15 both ranked Illinois lost to #4 Purdue 88-96 Illinois +14 both ranked Missouri State beat #22 Loyola of Chicago 79-69 Missouri State +14 Loyola of Chicago -14 Northwestern lost to #8 Wisconsin 76-82 Northwestern +12 Wisconsin -12 Utah lost to #9 UCLA 58-63 Utah +12 UCLA -12 West Virginia lost to #5 Baylor 68-77 West Virginia +12 Baylor -12 Colorado lost to #9 UCLA 65-71 Colorado +11 UCLA -11 Texas beat #21 Oklahoma State 56-51 Texas +10 Oklahoma State -10 San Francisco lost to #1 Gonzaga 62-78 San Francisco +9 Gonzaga -9 Texas A&M lost to #12 Kentucky 58-64 Texas A&M +8 Kentucky -8 Colorado lost to #16 Southern California 58-61 Colorado +7 Southern California -7 Oklahoma lost to #5 Baylor 51-65 Oklahoma +7 Baylor -7 Michigan State beat #8 Wisconsin 86-74 Michigan State +6 both ranked DePaul lost to #20 Xavier 67-68 DePaul +5 Xavier -5 Georgetown lost to #11 Villanova 74-85 Georgetown +4 Villanova -4 Kansas State beat #23 Texas 66-65 Kansas State +4 Texas -4 Northwestern lost to #4 Purdue 60-80 Northwestern +2 Purdue -2 Georgia lost to #2 Auburn 60-83 Georgia +1 Auburn -1 Syracuse lost to #6 Duke 59-79 Syracuse 0 Duke 0 Wisconsin lost to #14 Michigan State 74-86 Wisconsin 0 both ranked Butler lost to #21 Providence 62-69 Butler -2 Providence +2 California lost to #3 Arizona 71-96 California -2 Arizona +2 Utah lost to #16 Southern California 67-79 Utah -2 Southern California +2 Georgetown lost to #21 Providence 75-83 Georgetown -3 Providence +3 South Florida lost to #10 Houston 55-74 South Florida -3 Houston +3 Iowa State lost to #18 Texas Tech 60-72 Iowa State -4 both ranked Stanford lost to #3 Arizona 57-85 Stanford -5 Arizona +5 West Virginia #18 Texas Tech 65-78 West Virginia -5 Texas Tech +5 Vanderbilt lost to #24 Tennessee 60-68 Vanderbilt -6 Tennessee +6 Louisiana State lost to #24 Tennessee 50-64 Louisiana State -12 Tennessee +12 Butler lost to #25 Connecticut 59-76 Butler -16 Connecticut +16 Butler lost to #25 Connecticut 56-75 Butler -18 Connecticut +18 Evansville lost to #22 Loyola of Chicago 48-77 Evansville -25 Loyola of Chicago +25 East Carolina lost to #10 Houston 36-79 East Carolina -27 Houston +27 IUPUI lost to #19 Ohio State 37-83 IUPUI -39 Ohio State +39 Top Ten Against Ranked Teams Oklahoma +112 Gonzaga +111 Texas Tech +104 Villanova +98 Marquette +85 Alabama +75 Baylor +68 Oregon +59 Purdue +59 Iowa State +58 The worst is Butler -98 Syracuse is -8.
