The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc., down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc.). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking. (The last couple of years I’ve also kept track of ranked team’s performances vs. unranked teams by totaling the points gained or lost against them but that was a lot of extra work and tended to favor schools with weak schedules so I’m dropping that measure this year, as I did for the football version of this.) WEEK 16 (2/20-26) Boston College beat #6 Virginia 63-48 = +35 Indiana beat #5 Purdue 79-71 = +29 North Carolina beat #6 Virginia 71-63 = +28 Baylor beat #8 Texas 81-72 = +27 Connecticut beat #20 Providence 87-69 = +23 Michigan State beat #17 Indiana 80-65 = +24 Kansas State beat #9 Baylor 75-65 = +22 South Carolina lost to #2 Alabama 76-78 = +22 Arkansas lost to #2 Alabama 83-86 = +21 Texas beat #23 Iowa State 72-54 = +21 West Virginia lost to #3 Kansas 74-76 = +21 Arizona State beat #7 Arizona 89-88 = +20 Gonzaga beat #15 St. Mary’s 77-68 = +20 Texas A&M beat #11 Tennessee 68-63 = +20 Villanova beat #19 Creighton 79-67 = +19 Texas Christian lost to #3 Kansas 58-63 = +18 Utah lost to #4 UCLA 71-78 = +15 Creighton lost to #10 Marquette 71-73 = +14 Florida State beat #13 U of Miami 85-84 = +14 Oklahoma beat #23 Iowa State 61-50 = +14 Villanova beat #16 Xavier 64-63 = +11 DePaul lost to #10 Marquette 84-90 = +10 Illinois beat #21 Northwestern 66-62 = +9 Marquette beat #19 Creighton 73-71 = +9 Mississippi State beat #25 Texas A&M 69-62 = +8 Texas lost to #9 Baylor 72-81 = +8 Kansas beat #24 Texas Christian 63-58 = +7 Oklahoma State lost to #14 Kansas State 68-73 = +7 Virginia Tech lost to #13 U of Miami 70-76 = +7 East Carolina lost to #1 Houston 57-76 = +6 St. Mary’s lost to #12 Gonzaga 68-77 = +5 Baylor lost to #14 Kansas State 75-65 = +2 New Mexico lost to #22 San Diego State 71-73 = +2 Purdue lost to #17 Indiana 71-79 = +1 Texas Tech beat #24 Texas Christian 82-83 = +1 Iowa State lost to #8 Texas 54-72 = 0 St. John’s lost to #18 Connecticut 86-95 = -1 Tennessee lost to #25 Texas A&M 63-68 = -4 Tulane lost to #1 Houston 59-89 = -5 Providence lost to #18 Connecticut 69-87 = -10 San Diego lost to #12 Gonzaga 72-97 = -11 Seton Hall lost to #16 Xavier 60-82 = -12 Colorado State lost to #22 San Diego State 58-77 = -15 Pacific lost to #15 St. Mary’s 52-83 = -20 South Carolina lost to #11 Tennessee 45-85 = -25 TOP 25 Kansas +190 Texas +185 Iowa State +180 Kansas State +160 Creighton +149 Oklahoma +146 Texas Christian +139 Alabama +137 Michigan State +137 Tennessee +126 Arizona +122 Indiana +115 Xavier +114 Illinois +109 Baylor +105 Marquette +104 Maryland +98 Oklahoma State +92 Missouri +89 Gonzaga +86 Boston College +81 Purdue +80 Virginia +76 Texas Tech +74 Arizona State +72 Washington State +72 Comment: Both this and the NET rankings are part of the “non-conference bias”: The reputations of teams and their conferences is established in the early games and don’t change through the conference seasons so it’s difficult for teams in the conferences that did not do well in November and December to improve their ranking while, in the conference that did do well, the teams feed off of each other’s rankings. This, despite the fact that teams can improve as the season go along and conferences that supposedly were not good, such as the Pac12 two years ago or the ACC last year can shock people with their performances in the NCAA tournament. My solution: mix the schedule so that conferences and non-conference games are played in all four months of the regular season and mathematically give more weight to December games over November games, January over December and the games played from February 1st onward over the January games. The worst performance against ranked teams so far is that of Mississippi Valley State (-83) Syracuse has +15 points. ACC Teams: Boston College +81 Virginia +76 North Carolina State +68 Virginia Tech +55 North Carolina +50 Wake Forest +49 Notre Dame +42 U of Miami +32 Florida State +21 Duke +20 Syracuse +15 Clemson +7 Pittsburgh +5 Georgia Tech -4 Louisville -55 WEEKLY CHAMPIONS: WEEK 1 Michigan State lost to #2 Gonzaga 63-64 = +23 WEEK 2 Texas beat #2 Gonzaga 93-74 = +43 WEEK 3 Purdue beat #6 Gonzaga 84-66 = +38 WEEK 4 Marquette beat #6 Baylor 70-96 = +46 WEEK 5 Alabama beat #1 Houston 71-65 = +31 Illinois beat #2 Texas 85-78 = +31 WEEK 6 Kansas beat #14 Indiana 84-62 = +34 WEEK 7 San Francisco beat #25 Arizona State 97-60 = +38 WEEK 8 Xavier beat #2 Connecticut 83-73 = +34 WEEK 9 North Carolina State beat #16 Duke 84-60 +34 Providence beat #4 Connecticut 73-61 = +34 Washington State beat #5 Arizona 74-61 = +34 WEEK 10 Oregon beat #9 Arizona 87-68 = +36 WEEK 11 Texas Christian beat #2 Kansas 83-60 = +47 WEEK 12 Oklahoma beat #2 Alabama 93-69 = +48 WEEK 13 Florida beat #2 Tennessee 67-54 = +37 WEEK 14 Connecticut beat #10 Marquette 87-72 = +31 WEEK 14 Northwestern beat #1 Purdue 64-58 = +31 WEEK 14 Stanford beat #4 Arizona 88-79 = +31 WEEK 15 Maryland beat #3 Purdue 68-54 = +37 WEEK 16 Boston College beat #6 Virginia 63-48 = +35 TOP TEN PERFORMANCES: WEEK 12 Oklahoma beat #2 Alabama 93-69 = +48 WEEK 11 Texas Christian beat #2 Kansas 83-60 = +47 WEEK 4 Marquette beat #6 Baylor 96-70 = +46 WEEK 2 Texas beat #2 Gonzaga 93-74 = +43 WEEK 2 Gonzaga beat #4 Kentucky 88-72 = +38 WEEK 3 Purdue beat #6 Gonzaga 84-66 = +38 WEEK 7 San Francisco beat #25 Arizona State 97-60 = +38 WEEK 3 Purdue beat #8 Duke 75-56 = +37 WEEK 3 Tennessee beat #3 Kansas 64-50 = +37 WEEK 4 Utah beat #4 Arizona 81-66 = +37 WEEK 13 Florida beat #2 Tennessee 67-54 = +37 WEEK 15 Maryland beat #3 Purdue 68-54 = +37
