[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 4996821, member: 289"] The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc., down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc.). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking. Week 17 Creighton beat #5 Marquette 89-75 = +35 Baylor beat #7 Kansas 82-74 = +27 Brigham Young lost to #7 Kansas 76-68 = +27 Oklahoma lost to #1 Houston 85-87 = +23 Tennessee beat #11 Auburn 92-84 = +23 Gonzaga beat #17 Saint Mary’s 70-57 = +22 Tennessee beat #14 Alabama 81-74 = +19 Michigan State lost to #2 Purdue 74-80 = +18 Cincinnati lost to #1 Houston 59-67 = +17 Alabama lost to #4 Tennessee 74-81 = +15 Auburn lost to #4 Tennessee 84-92 = +14 U of Miami lost to #9 North Carolina 71-75 = +13 Central Florida lost to #8 Iowa State 52-60 = +10 Loyola-Chicago beat #21 Dayton 77-72 = +10 Mississippi State lost to #16 Kentucky 89-91 = +8 North Carolina State lost to #9 North Carolina 70-79 = +8 South Carolina beat #24 Florida 82-76 = +8 Texas A&M lost to #18 South Carolina 68-70 = +6 Minnesota lost to #13 Illinois 97-105 = +5 Oklahoma lost to #8 Iowa State 45-58 = +5 Wisconsin lost to #13 Illinois 83-91 = +5 Southern California lost to #19 Washington State 72-75 = +4 Kansas lost to #15 Baylor 74-82 = +3 Texas Christian lost to #15 Baylor 54-62 = +3 Arizona State lost to #6 Arizona 67-85 = +2 Florida lost to #18 South Carolina 76-82 = +2 Arkansas lost to #16 Kentucky 102-111 = +1 Fresno State lost to #22 Utah State = Even Marquette lost to #12 Creighton 75-89 = Even Mississippi State lost to #11 Auburn 63-78 = Even Oregon lost to #6 Arizona 83-103 = Even Providence lost to #5 Marquette 69-91 = -1 San Jose State lost to #20 San Diego State 64-72 = -2 Mississippi lost to #14 Alabama 88-103 = -3 UCLA lost to #19 Washington State 65-77 = -5 Missouri lost to #24 Florida 74-83 = -7 Seton Hall lost to #12 Creighton 64-85 = -7 Seton Hall lost to #3 Connecticut 61-91 = -7 Air Force lost to #22 Utah State 60-72 = -8 Davidson lost to #21 Dayton 66-80 = -9 Louisville lost to #10 Duke 59-84 = -9 Virginia lost to #10 Duke 48-73 = -9 Saint Mary’s lost to #23 Gonzaga 57-70 = -10 Charlotte lost to #25 South Florida 61-76 = -14 San Francisco lost to #23 Gonzaga 68-86 = -15 Pepperdine lost to #17 Saint Mary’s 57-83 = -17 Everybody’s talking about how the scheduling of some conferences, (the Big 12 says Hi!) benefits their ‘Net’ ranking and then their members play each other and their Net ranking grows. Unfortunately, it works the same way with poll rankings and this with “Against Ranked Teams” rankings. Maybe I should do Sagarin’s -or somebody’s -top 100 and give a point for every group of 5. But that sounds like a lot more work. And would it avoid the scheduling bias?
