[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 4603579, member: 289"] The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc., down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc.). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking. (The last couple of years I’ve also kept track of ranked team’s performances vs. unranked teams by totaling the points gained or lost against them but that was a lot of extra work and tended to favor schools with weak schedules so I’m dropping that measure this year, as I did for the football version of this.) WEEK 18 Texas beat #3 Kansas 76-56 = +43 Memphis beat #1 Houston 75-65 = +35 Alabama beat #18 Texas A&M 82-63 = +27 Texas Christian beat #12 Kansas State 80-67 = +27 Arizona beat #2 UCLA 61-59 = +26 Marquette beat #15 Xavier 65-51 = +25 Xavier beat #24 Creighton 82-60 = +24 Duke beat #13 Virginia 59-49 = +23 Iowa State beat #10 Baylor 78-72 = +22 Duke beat #14 U of Miami 85-78 = +19 Penn State beat #5 Purdue 65-67 = +19 Connecticut lost to #6 Marquette 68-70 = +18 St, John’s lost to #6 Marquette 70-72 = +18 Marquette beat #11 Connecticut 70-68 = +17 Missouri beat #17 Tennessee 79-71 = +17 UCLA lost to #8 Arizona 59-61 = +16 Rutgers lost to #5 Purdue 65-70 = +16 Alabama beat #25 Missouri 72-61 = +13 Colorado lost to #2 UCLA 69-80 = +13 Texas Christian lost to #7 Texas 60-66 = +13 East Carolina lost to #1 Houston 46-60 = +11 Missouri lost to #4 Alabama 61-72 = +11 Penn State beat Indiana 77-73 = +11 Iowa State lost to #3 Kansas 58-71 = +10 Texas beat #22 Texas Christian 66-60 = +10 Vanderbilt lost to #23 Kentucky 80-73 = +10 Wake Forest lost to #14 U of Miami 72-74 = +10 Providence lost to #11 Connecticut 66-73 = +8 Ohio State lost to #5 Purdue 66-80 = +7 Stanford lost to #8 Arizona 84-95 = +7 DePaul lost to #15 Xavier 84-89 = +6 Xavier lost to #6 Marquette 51-65 = +6 San Francisco lost to #9 Gonzaga 73-84 = +6 West Virginia lost to #3 Kansas 61-78 = +6 Oklahoma State lost to #7 Texas 47-61 = +5 Oregon lost to #2 UCLA 56-75 = +5 Virginia lost to #21 Duke 49-59 = +5 Cincinnati lost to #1 Houston 48-69 = +4 North Carolina lost to #13 Virginia 59-68 = +4 Brigham Young lost to #16 St. Mary’s 69-76 = +3 Colorado State lost to #20 San Diego State 61-64 = +3 Texas A&M lost to #4 Alabama 63-82 = +3 Arkansas lost to #18 Texas A&M 61-67 = +2 Utah State lost to #20 San Diego State 57-62 = +1 Arizona State lost to #8 Arizona 59-78 = -1 Kansas lost to #7 Texas 56-76 = -1 Mississippi State lost to #4 Alabama 49-72 = -1 U of Miami lost to #21 Duke 78-85 = -2 Maryland lost to #19 Indiana 60-70 = -3 Vanderbilt lost to #18 Texas A&M 75-87 = -4 Mississippi lost to #17 Tennessee 55-70 = -6 Clemson lost to #13 Virginia 56-76 = -7 Tennessee lost to #25 Missouri 71-79 = -7 Kansas State lost to #22 Texas Christian 67-80 = -9 San Jose State lost to #20 San Diego State 49-64 = -9 Creighton lost to #15 Xavier 60-82 = -11 Villanova lost to #24 Creighton 74-87 = -11 Pittsburgh lost to #21 Duke 69-96 = -22 TOP 25 Texas +279 Iowa State +246 Texas Christian +198 Kansas +190 Alabama +173 Oklahoma +163 Arizona +161 Xavier +155 Kansas State +151 Marquette +146 Creighton +138 Michigan State +137 Illinois +125 Tennessee +119 Memphis +117 Missouri +117 Indiana +115 UCLA +113 Oklahoma State +110 Baylor +105 Auburn +104 Texas A&M +104 West Virginia +100 Maryland +95 Texas Tech +93 Comment: Both this and the NET rankings are part of the “non-conference bias”: The reputations of teams and their conferences is established in the early games and don’t change through the conference seasons so it’s difficult for teams in the conferences that did not do well in November and December to improve their ranking while, in the conference that did do well, the teams feed off of each other’s rankings. This, despite the fact that teams can improve as the season go along and conferences that supposedly were not good, such as the Pac12 two years ago or the ACC last year can shock people with their performances in the NCAA tournament. My solution: mix the schedule so that conferences and non-conference games are played in all four months of the regular season and mathematically give more weight to December games over November games, January over December and the games played from February 1st onward over the January games. The worst performance against ranked teams so far is that of Mississippi Valley State (-83) Syracuse has +15 points. ACC Teams: Virginia +76 North Carolina State +68 Virginia Tech +55 North Carolina +50 Notre Dame +50 Wake Forest +49 Duke +43 U of Miami +35 Boston College +27 Florida State +21 Syracuse +15 Clemson +13 Georgia Tech -4 Pittsburgh -15 Louisville -55 WEEKLY CHAMPIONS: WEEK 1 Michigan State lost to #2 Gonzaga 63-64 = +23 WEEK 2 Texas beat #2 Gonzaga 93-74 = +43 WEEK 3 Purdue beat #6 Gonzaga 84-66 = +38 WEEK 4 Marquette beat #6 Baylor 70-96 = +46 WEEK 5 Alabama beat #1 Houston 71-65 = +31 Illinois beat #2 Texas 85-78 = +31 WEEK 6 Kansas beat #14 Indiana 84-62 = +34 WEEK 7 San Francisco beat #25 Arizona State 97-60 = +38 WEEK 8 Xavier beat #2 Connecticut 83-73 = +34 WEEK 9 North Carolina State beat #16 Duke 84-60 +34 Providence beat #4 Connecticut 73-61 = +34 Washington State beat #5 Arizona 74-61 = +34 WEEK 10 Oregon beat #9 Arizona 87-68 = +36 WEEK 11 Texas Christian beat #2 Kansas 83-60 = +47 WEEK 12 Oklahoma beat #2 Alabama 93-69 = +48 WEEK 13 Florida beat #2 Tennessee 67-54 = +37 WEEK 14 Connecticut beat #10 Marquette 87-72 = +31 WEEK 14 Northwestern beat #1 Purdue 64-58 = +31 WEEK 14 Stanford beat #4 Arizona 88-79 = +31 WEEK 15 Maryland beat #3 Purdue 68-54 = +37 WEEK 16 Boston College beat #6 Virginia 63-48 = +35 WEEK 17 Texas beat #3 Kansas 75-59 = +39 WEEK 18 Texas beat #3 Kansas 76-56 = +43 Comment: You’ve got to be impressed with how the Longhorns chewed up Kansas and spit them out.
