This year I will be again charting how teams have done “against ranked teams”, which is something that always comes up at the end of the year when the arguments over who should be in the NCAA tournament start. As usual, this is not meant to end those arguments, just to give those making them something to look at in forming their opinions. I’m going to do it a bit differently this year. The old procedure was that I would first grant teams playing ranked teams a certain number of points based on who they are playing. If you played the #1 team, (I use the AP- writer’s poll for continuity), you get 25 points. If you are playing the #2 team, you get 24 points, etc. down to getting 1 point for playing the #25 team. I call these “schedule points”. Here’s a chart to make it simple: 1-25, 2-24, 3-23, 4-22, 5-21, 6-20, 7-19, 8-18, 9-17, 10-16, 11-15, 12-14, 13-13, 14-12, 15-11, 16-10, 17-9, 18-8, 19-7, 20-6, 21-5, 22-4, 23-3, 24-2, 25-1. (Of course you can always just subtract the ranking from 26. That will work every time.) Then I look at the point differential in the actual game. If you defeated the ranked team, you add the number of points you won by to the schedule points. If you lost to that team, you subtract the margin you lost by from the schedule points. (I call these ‘game’ points.) The difference between this year and last year if that I didn’t count any deficit: if you got to zero, you got zero. This year I’m going to try to record negative points, too, so a team can get full ‘credit’ for a really bad performance. WEEK 2 Texas Tech beat #20 Northwestern 85-49 = +42 points Duke beat #2 Michigan State 88-81 = +31 points Kansas beat #7 Kentucky 65-61 = +23 points Kentucky lost to #4 Kansas 61-65 = +18 points Michigan State lost to #1 Duke 81-88 = +18 points Vanderbilt lost to #10 Southern California 89-93 = +12 points New Hampshire lost to #8 Florida 63-70 = +11 points Creighton beat #20 Northwestern 92-88 = +10 points Southern U. lost to #1 Duke 61-78 = +8 points North Dakota St. lost to #10 Southern California 65-75= +6 points Bucknell lost to #9 North Carolina 81-93 = +5 points Charleston lost to #6 Wichita State 63-81 = +2 points East Tennessee State lost to #7 Kentucky 61-78 = +2 points Stony Brook lost to #2 Michigan State 71-93 = +2 points Cal St. Bakersfield lost to #3 Arizona 59-91 = +1 points Wisconsin lost to #15 Xavier 70-80 = +1 point Providence lost to #14 Minnesota 74-86 = 0 points Omaha lost to #18 Louisville 78-87 = -1 points Central Arkansas lost to #23 UCLA 101-106 = -2 points LaSalle lost to #20 Northwestern 74-82 = -2 points Saint Peters lost to #20 Northwestern 66-75 = -3 points Utah State lost to #17 Gonzaga 66-79 = -4 points Marquette lost to #19 Purdue 71-86 = -8 points UC Santa Barbara lost to #16 Texas A&M 65-84 = -9 points Indiana lost to #22 Seton Hall 68-84 = -12 points South Dakota State lost to #4 Kansas 64-98 = -12 points Mount St. Mary’s lost to #13 Notre Dame 62-88 = -13 points New Mexico State lost to #21 St. Mary’s 74-92 = -13 points San Jose State lost to #21 St. Mary’s 61-79 = -13 points Fullerton State lost to #21 St. Mary’s 57-76 = -14 points Niagara lost to #14 Minnesota 81-107 = -14 points Nicholls lost to #5 Villanova 77-113 = -15 points Rider lost to #15 Xavier 75-101 = -15 points Alcorn State lost to #25 Baylor 61-78 = -16 points Florida A&M lost to #11 U of Miami 59-90 = -16 points Western Carolina lost to #14 Minnesota 64-92 = -16 points Gardner-Webb lost to #5 Florida 74-116 = -21 points North Florida lost to #8 Florida 68-108 = -22 points Texas A&M Corpus Christi lost to #25 Baylor 46-70 = -23 points New Jersey Tech lost to #22 Seton hall 53-82 = -25 points South Carolina State lost to #23 UCLA 68-96 = -25 points Chicago State lost to #13 Notre Dame 66-105 = -26 points Lafayette lost to #5 Villanova 57-104 = -26 points Howard lost to #17 Gonzaga 69-106 = -28 points Coppin State lost to #12 Cincinnati 54-97 = -29 points American U. lost to #24 West Virginia 64-98 = -32 points Fairfield lost to #19 Purdue 64-106 = -36 points Western Carolina lost to #12 Cincinnati 51-102 = -37 points Morgan State lost to #24 West Virginia 48-111 = -61 points Comments: It's still very early in the season and most of the teams playing ranked teams are teams brought in for them to beat. But there are some significant results anyway, especially from that double hearder involving 4 of the top 7 teams in the country. And Texas Tech's beat-down of Northwestern has got to be one of the worst losses of a ranked team to an unranked team ever. Top 25 Texas Tech +42 points Texas A&M +38 points Duke +31 points Kansas +23 points Kentucky +18 points Michigan State +18 points Vermont +17 points Vanderbilt +12 points New Hampshire +11 points Creighton +10 points North Dakota St. +6 points Utah Valley +6 points Bucknell +5 points Columbia +5 points Charleston +2 points East Tennessee State +2 points Georgia Tech +2 points Stony Brook +2 points Cal St. Bakersfield +1 point Northern Iowa 0 points Providence 0 points George Mason -1 point Omaha -1 points DePaul -2 points Elon -2 points MD-Baltimore County -2 points Syracuse has yet to play a ranked team. The worst team so far is by Chicago State, -89 points
