[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 2798614, member: 289"] This year I will be again charting how teams have done “against ranked teams”, which is something that always comes up at the end of the year when the arguments over who should be in the NCAA tournament start. As usual, this is not meant to end those arguments, just to give those making them something to look at in forming their opinions. This is just one thing to look at. But I think it’s a big thing. I’m going to do it a bit differently this year. The old procedure was that I would first grant teams playing ranked teams a certain number of points based on who they are playing. If you played the #1 team, (I use the AP- writer’s poll for continuity), you get 25 points. If you are playing the #2 team, you get 24 points, etc. down to getting 1 point for playing the #25 team. I call these “schedule points”. Here’s a chart to make it simple: 1-25, 2-24, 3-23, 4-22, 5-21, 6-20, 7-19, 8-18, 9-17, 10-16, 11-15, 12-14, 13-13, 14-12, 15-11, 16-10, 17-9, 18-8, 19-7, 20-6, 21-5, 22-4, 23-3, 24-2, 25-1. (Of course you can always just subtract the ranking from 26. That will work every time.) Then I look at the point differential in the actual game. If you defeated the ranked team, you add the number of points you won by to the schedule points. If you lost to that team, you subtract the margin you lost by from the schedule points. (I call these ‘game’ points.) The difference between this year and last year if that I didn’t count any deficit: if you got to zero, you got zero. This year I’m going to try to record negative points, too, so a team can get full ‘credit’ for a really bad performance. WEEK THREE Michigan State beat #17 UCLA 87-67 = +29 points Gonzaga beat #1 Duke 89-87 = +27 points Kansas beat #5 Tennessee 87-81 = +27 points North Carolina beat #17 UCLA 94-78 = +25 points Duke beat #8 Auburn 78-72 = +24 points Texas beat to #7 North Carolina 92-89 = +22 points Duke lost to #3 Gonzaga 87-89 = +21 points Oklahoma State beat #19 Louisiana State 90-77 = +20 points Auburn lost to #1 Duke 72-78 = +19 points Tennessee lost to #2 Kansas 81-87 = +18 points Villanova beat #14 Florida State 66-60 = +18 points Illinois lost to #3 Gonzaga 78-84 = +17 points Lipscomb beat #18 Texas Christian 73-64 = +17 points Arizona State beat #15 Mississippi State 72-67 = +16 points Creighton beat #16 Clemson 87-82 = +15 points Dayton lost to #4 Virginia 59-66 = +15 points Marquette lost to #2 Kansas 68-77 = +15 points Wisconsin lost to #4 Virginia 46-53 = +15 points Florida State beat #19 Louisiana State 79-76 = +10 points Louisville lost to #5 Tennessee 81-92 = +10 points Tulsa lost to #6 Nevada-Reno 86-96 = +10 points Louisiana State lost to #14 Florida State 76-79 = +9 points Xavier lost to #8 Auburn 79-88 = +9 points Virginia beat #25 Wisconsin 53-46 = +8 points Akron lost to #16 Clemson 69-72 = +7 points St. Mary’s lost to #15 Mississippi State 57-61 = +7 points Arizona lost to #3 Gonzaga 74-91 = +6 points UCLA lost to #7 North Carolina 78-94 = +3 points Winthrop lost to #10 Kentucky 74-87 = +3 points Arizona lost to #8 Auburn 57-73 = +2 points Tennessee State lost to #10 Kentucky 62-77 = +1 point Middle Tennessee lost to #4 Virginia 52-74 = 0 points Missouri lost to #12 Kansas State 67-82 = -1 point San Diego State lost to #1 Duke 64-90 = -1 point Massachusetts lost to #6 Nevada-Reno 87-110 = -3 points Charleston lost to #19 Louisiana State 55-67 = -5 points Georgia lost to #16 Clemson 49-64 = -5 points Lehigh lost to #12 Kansas State 58-77 = -5 points Texas lost to #11 Michigan State 68-78 = -5 points UCLA lost to #11 Michigan State 67-87 = -5 points Green Bay lost to #21 Oregon 72-83 = -6 points Presbyterian lost to #17 UCLA 65-80 = -6 points St. Francis (Pa) lost to #7 North Carolina 76-101 = -6 points Alabama-Birmingham lost to #14 Florida State 63-81 = -6 points Chattanooga lost to #9 Michigan 55-83 = -11 points California Baptist lost to #6 Nevada-Reno 55-90 = -15 points Samford lost to #23 Ohio State 50-68 = -15 points Stanford lost to #25 Wisconsin 46-62 = -15 points Oklahoma lost to #25 Wisconsin 58-78 = -19 points Canisius lost to #14 Florida State 61-93 = -20 points Alabama State lost to #20 Iowa 78-105 = -21 points Marist lost to #22 Buffalo 49-76 = -23 points Cleveland State lost to #23 Ohio State 62-89 = -24 points St. Francis (Pa.) lost to #13 Virginia Tech 37-75 = -25 points Dartmouth lost to #22 Buffalo 71-110 = -35 points Robert Morris lost to #24 Purdue 46-84 = -36 points Comment: well, Duke isn’t invincible but they still gained points from playing top teams and have a huge early lead in the standings.
