[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 4112669, member: 289"] The last few years I’ve attempted to quantify team’s performances against ranked teams, (historically a big factor in decisions made about getting into playoffs) with a system that gives points to teams for the ranking of their opponents and adds or subtracts the point differential in their games, (adds in a win, subtracts in a loss). The ‘ranking’ points are 25 for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for playing a #2 ranked team, etc, down to 1 point for playing a 25th ranked team. These points are easily computed by subtracting the ranking number from 26, (26-1 = 25; 26-25 =1, etc). Over the course of the season, I add the points earned by each team in their games against ranked teams as a sort of standings but have always maintained that this is just one thing to look at in evaluating the team, not a final overall ranking. I didn’t do that for this year’s football season because with some conferences opting out and then opting back in later in the seasons, the rankings were a mess. But everybody is playing basketball now, or trying to, so I’ve decided to keep track of performances against ranked teams in this sport. I’ve decided to add an extra wrinkle: I will keep track of the performances of the ranked teams themselves by totaling the points earned against them, with the +/- reversed. This will measure their performance “as a ranked team” We’ll see how that goes and I’ll decide whether to continue with that. When ranked teams play each other, their only points will be under the first test. Otherwise the Duke-Kentucky game would look like this: Duke beat #10 Kentucky 79-71: Duke +24 Kentucky -24 Kentucky lost to #9 Duke 71-79: Kentucky +9 Duke -9 That would give Duke +15 points and Kentucky -15 points. They should both get credit for playing each other in a competitive game. Giving Duke +24 points and Kentucky +9 makes more sense.) WEEK #8 (12/27/21-1/2/21) Auburn beat #16 Louisiana State 70-55 Auburn +25 both ranked Baylor beat #8 Iowa State 77-72 Baylor +23 both ranked Alabama beat #14 Tennessee 73-68 Alabama +17 both ranked Iowa State lost to #1 Baylor 72-77 Iowa State +16 both ranked Providence beat #15 Seton Hall 70-65 Providence +16 both ranked Northwestern lost to #10 Michigan State 67-73 Northwestern +10 Michigan State -10 George Mason lost to #6 Kansas 67-76 George Mason +9 Kansas -9 Nichols lost to #3 Purdue 90-104 Nichols +9 Purdue -9 Temple lost to #12 Houston 61-66 Temple +9 Houston -9 Nebraska lost to #13 Ohio State 79-87 Nebraska +5 Ohio State -5 Villanova beat #15 Seton Hall 73-67 Villanova +5 both ranked High Point lost to #10 Michigan State 68-81 High Point +3 Michigan State -3 Tennessee lost to #19 Alabama 73-68 Tennessee +2 both ranked Louisiana State lost to #11 Auburn 55-70 Louisiana State 0 both ranked Seton Hall lost to #21 Providence 65-70 Seton Hall 0 both ranked Seton Hall lost to #22 Villanova 67-73 Seton Hall -2 both ranked Illinois State lost to #24 Wisconsin 85-89 Illinois State -2 Wisconsin +2 West Virginia lost to #17 Texas 59-74 West Virginia -6 Texas +6 Nevada-Reno lost to #6 Kansas 61-88 Nevada-Reno -7 Kansas +7 North Alabama lost to #4 Gonzaga 63-93 North Alabama -8 Gonzaga +8 DePaul lost to #21 Providence 53-70 DePaul -12 Providence +12 NW Louisiana lost to #2 Baylor 68-104 NW Louisiana -12 Baylor +12 Missouri lost to #18 Kentucky 56-83 Missouri -19 Kentucky +19 Alabama State lost to #25 Texas Tech 53-75 Alabama State -21 Texas Tech +21 High Point lost to #18 Kentucky 48-92 High Point -36 Kentucky +36 Incarnate Word lost to #17 Texas 33-78 Incarnate Word -36 Texas +36 Top Ten Against Ranked Teams Gonzaga +111 Villanova +85 Baylor +64 Oklahoma +55 Tennessee +54 Creighton +52 Duke +52 Brigham Young +46 Seton Hall +45 Purdue +44 The worst is NW Louisiana -75 Syracuse is -8.
