I’ll continue to keep track of how teams did against ranked teams. Just something to look at in evaluating teams. The formula is to give teams points based on the ranking of the team they played: 25 points for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for #2, 23 for #3, down to 1 point for playing #25. (A shortcut: subtract the number of the ranking from 26). Then you add in the net point differential of the game. Example: Navy lost to #13 Notre Dame 3-42. The Middies get 13 points for playing the #13 team but lose 39 for losing to that team 3-42. Net points: -26. Let’s see who had the best result each week and who accumulates the most points over the season. WEEK 11 Central Florida beat #15 Oklahoma State 45-3 = +53 Georgia beat #9 Mississippi 52-17 = +52 Missouri beat #13 Tennessee 36-7 = +42 Michigan beat #10 Penn State 24-15 = +25 Texas Christian lost to #7 Texas 26-29 = +16 U of Miami lost to #4 Florida State 20-27 = +15 Washington beat #18 Utah 35-28 = +15 Penn State lost to #3 Michigan 15-24 = +14 Utah lost to #5 Washington 28-35 = +14 Texas Tech beat #16 Kansas 16-13 = +13 Southern California lost to #6 Oregon 27-36 = +11 Virginia lost to #11 Louisville 24-31 = +8 Colorado lost to #21 Arizona 31-34 = +2 Tulsa lost to #23 Tulane 22-24 = +1 Duke lost to #24 North Carolina 45-47 = Even Florida lost to #19 Louisiana State 35-52 = -10 Kentucky lost to #8 Alabama 21-49 = -10 Michigan State lost to #1 Ohio State 3-38 = -10 Mississippi lost to #2 Georgia 17-52 = -11 Tennessee lost to #14 Missouri 7-36 = -17 Rutgers lost to #22 Iowa 0-22 = -18 West Virginia lost to #17 Oklahoma 20-59 = -30 Stanford lost to #12 Oregon State 17-62 = -31 Baylor lost to #25 Kansas State 25-59 = -33 Surely Georgia’s demolition of Ole Miss, (which I watched), was going to be #1 for the week – after all it was #1 for the season. They both rushed and passed for 300 yards and looked every bit the first team to win three straight national championships in the poll era. Not so fast, my friend! Oklahoma’s State’s embarrassing HOME loss to UCF, (which I didn’t watch), a week after their emotional win in the last “Bedlam” game over Oklahoma, topped it. Imagine the emotions of the Cowboy players, coaches and fans. In this era of big scores, Washington has won their last six games by 7, 3. 8. 9, 10, and 7 points. It won’t get any easier at #12 Oregon State or at home in the last Apple Bowl against Washington State, followed by the conference title game. But to win the national title, you’ve got to be able to win close games and they have shown they have the right stuff to do it. WEEKLY LEADERS Week 0 San Jose State lost to #6 Southern California 28-56 = -8 points Week 1 Florida State beat #5 Louisiana State 45-24 = +42 Week 2 Texas beat #3 Alabama 34-24 = +33 Week 3 Florida beat #11 Tennessee 29-16 = +28 Week 4 Oregon beat #19 Colorado 42-6 = +43 Week 5 Oregon State beat #10 Utah 21-7 = +30 Week 6 Georgia beat #20 Kentucky 51-13 = +44 Week 7 Arizona beat #19 Washington State 44-6 = +45 Week 8 Florida State beat #16 Duke 38-20 = +28 Week 9 Oregon beat #13 Utah 35-6 = +42 Week 10 Alabama beat #14 Louisiana State 42-28 = +26 Week 11 Central Florida beat #15 Oklahoma State 45-3 = +53 TOP 10 PERFORMANCES Week 11 Central Florida beat #15 Oklahoma State 45-3 = +53 Week 11 Georgia beat #9 Mississippi 52-17 = +52 Week 7 Arizona beat #19 Washington State 44-6 = +45 points Week 6 Georgia beat #20 Kentucky 51-13 = +44 Week 7 Notre Dame beat #10 So California 48-20 = +44 Week 4 Oregon beat #19 Colorado 42-6 = +43 Week 1 Florida State beat #5 Louisiana State 45-24 = +42 Week 11Missouri beat #13 Tennessee 36-7 = +42 Week 9 Oregon beat #13 Utah 35-6 = +42 Week 1 Duke beat #9 Clemson 28-7 = +38 Week 5 Oregon State beat #10 Utah 21-7 = +30 TOP 25 CUMMULATIVE Georgia +119 points Arizona +114 Oregon +101 Alabama +79 Missouri +77 Texas +73 Central Florida +71 Florida State +70 Notre Dame +65 Penn State +62 Louisville +58 Oregon State +52 Washington +52 Ohio State +47 U of Miami +37 Duke +35 Clemson +34 Oklahoma State +30 UCLA +28 Arkansas +26 Mississippi +26 Oklahoma +26 Michigan +25 Washington State +25 Kansas +22 Texas A&M +22 The worst game: Week 1: Arkansas State lost to #20 Oklahoma 0-73 = -67 Worst Cumulative: Stanford -98 Syracuse is -37. SU opponents: Colgate none (0 would mean they played a ranked team and came out even), Western Michigan -30, Purdue -16, Army -34, Clemson +34, North Carolina +11, Florida State +70, Virginia Tech -19, Boston College +21, Pittsburgh -13, Georgia Tech +9, Wake Forest -3
